Management Information Systems - Hospitality Concentration (BS)


Program Educational Goals


A major in Management Information Systems - Hospitality Concentration will prepare students to:

1.     Understand how businesses can use information systems, databases, and business intelligence tools as a strategic advantage 

2.     Code a solution to a business problem using a modern programming language

3.     Design and implement a data communications system based on business requirements

4.     Model and create databases based on business requirements and query databases using query languages 

5.     Design and implement a web-based solution to a business problem

6.     Analyze proposed and/or existing systems and model various aspects of the system

7.     Apply the stages of system development to build functional, structural, and behavioral models of a proposed and/or existing system.

8.     Solve real-world business problems and build leadership and team management skills

9.     Implement project management methodologies and best practices

10.  Communicate with business partners to solve real business challenges 

11. Gain subject matter expertise in hospitality to create information systems for hospitality related problems.

MIS Electives:


Six credits of MISY courses 300-level or above (excluding the MISY core courses listed above). If students take both MISY 408  and MISY 450 , one can count toward the core and the other can count as an elective. Students in the Business Analytics Minor  cannot use MISY/BUAD 345  or MISY 445 /BUAD 445  as MIS elective credit. Students must achieve a minimum grade of C- to qualify as an MISY elective.

Students are encouraged (but not required) to choose one of two elective tracks: Business Analytics or Enterprise Systems. 

Business Analytics Track:

The optional business analytics track provides a strong foundation for understanding data science and analytics. To qualify for this track, students must take MISY 408  in the MISY core.

Please note that students pursuing the business analytics track are not eligible for the business analytics minor.  Student who wish to take the business analytics minor should instead pursue the enterprise systems track, and add the business analytics minor as a separate program.

Enterprise Systems Track:

The optional enterprise systems track provides a strong foundation for understanding the pervasive use and management of enterprise systems. To qualify for this track, students must take MISY 450  in the MISY core.

Electives:


After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
