Early Childhood Education (BS)

Program Educational Goals:
The ECE major addresses the National Association for the Education of Young Children Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators The program uses course grades and assessments of assignments in key courses to ensure that these standards are met.
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Develop and implement experiences for children based in an understanding of child development and learning for children birth to age 8 (STANDARD 1: Child Development and Learning in Context)
- Develop and implement experiences for young children that demonstrate an understanding of the importance of developing strong relationships with families and the broader community in and around the school (STANDARD 2: Family-Teacher Partnerships and Community Connections).
- Employ appropriate professional practices to observe, document, and assess learning in formal and informal learning environments and situations and use this information in planning appropriate educational experiences for young children (STANDARD 3: Child Observation, Documentation, and Assessment)
- Develop and implement lessons and teaching practices that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate (STANDARD 4: Developmentally, Culturally, and Linguistically Appropriate Teaching Practices)
- Demonstrate appropriate content knowledge by applying and integrating academic content in developing and implementing educational experiences for young children with and without disabilities. (STANDARD 5: Knowledge, Application, and Integration of Academic Content in the Early Childhood Curriculum)
- Describe and demonstrate professionalism in coursework, student teaching, and other academic and professional experiences and educational settings (STANDARD 6: Professionalism as an Early Childhood Educator).

Major Requirements:
- Some University requirements may be met by Major Requirements. See an advisor for a planning guide.
- Students must earn a minimum grade of C- in all HDFS courses, EDUC 210 and EDUC 230 .
Additional Breadth Requirements:
Six credits of History and Cultural Change (three credits of this requirement fulfills the University History and Cultural Change requirement if a student receives a C- in that course). Science Elective:
Could satisfy the University’s Math, Natural Science, technology requirement if a student receives a C- in that course. Laboratory Sciences:
Two four-credit lab science courses from Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology from the following list: Math Electives:

Student Teaching:
- Prerequisites for EDUC 400 : To be eligible to student teach, Early Childhood Education majors must have a GPA of 2.75 in their major and an overall GPA of 2.50. They must also meet Student Teaching entry requirements established by the University Council on Teacher Education. Students must earn a minimum grade of C- in all HDFS courses, EDUC 210 , and EDUC 230 . A student failing to meet the minimum required grade of C- when taking a major course for the second time may not be permitted to remain in an HDFS major requiring that course. Students may appeal this decision.
Electives:
After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credits required for the degree. Only four credits of Music ensemble and four credits of 100-200 level courses in Military Science/ Army ROTC may be counted toward the degree.
