Chemical Engineering (BChE)

University Requirements:


College Requirements:


  • The College of Engineering requires nine additional breadth credits (21 credits total including the University Breadth requirements) (minimum grade of C-).
    • These nine credits may be selected in any combination from the University Breadth Requirements  list and the College of Engineering Breadth Requirement List  in any category except Math, Natural Sciences and Technology.
    • Of the 21 credits, six credits must be at the Upper Level, defined as:
      • any 300-level or higher course on the University Breadth Requirement list (excluding Math, Natural Sciences and Technology courses)
      • any 300-level or higher course on the College of Engineering Breadth Requirement list (excluding Math, Natural Sciences and Technology courses)
      • any foreign language instruction course at the 107 level or higher as designated on the College of Engineering Breadth Requirement list (some courses above the 107 level do NOT count toward this requirement because they are taught in English).
    • A maximum of two courses (six credits) can be taken from the Career and Professional Preparation sub-section of the College of Engineering Breadth Requirement list to satisfy the College of Engineering additional breadth requirement.
    • Of the 21 credits, three credits may be used to satisfy the University Multicultural Requirement (recommended for timely progress toward degree completion.)
    • With few exceptions, students may not use courses from their major to satisfy Breadth Requirement coursework.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Courses taken from the College of Engineering Breadth Requirement list can ONLY count toward the additional nine credits of breadth the College of Engineering requires for its majors. They CANNOT count for University Breadth.

Academic Standards


Students pursuing any engineering major (except Computer Science or Information Systems) must have at least a 2.0 grade point average in all engineering, mathematics, and science courses used to fulfill graduation requirements. If a course is repeated, only the last grade will be used to compute the engineering grade point average; all grades are used to compute the University’s cumulative grade point index. Credit from courses taken pass/fail cannot be used to complete any engineering degree requirement, unless the course is only offered pass/fail in the engineering curriculum.

Major Requirements:


  • A minimum grade of C- in all Chemical Engineering (CHEG) courses counted towards graduation.
  • A minimum grade of C- in any course that is a prerequisite to a CHEG course.
  • A biology requirement that can be fulfilled by any one of the following three options:
    • Advance Placement - a score of 4 or 5 on the College Board Biology AP exam or a score of 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level exam.
    • BISC 207 - Introductory Biology I   or an equivalent course as approved by the student’s academic advisor.
    • Biochemistry (CHEM 527, three credits) or equivalent.

*Students with a minimum GPA of 3.2 or those with approval from both the CHEG 473  course instructor and the student’s research advisor may replace CHEG 445  with CHEG 473 . Eligible students may also replace CHEG 445  with UNIV 401 .

**CHEM 332 - Organic Chemistry  and one of the following:

  • AP Score of 4 or 5 in the College Board AP Biology Exam or
  • IB Score of 6 or 7 or
  • Intro to Bio I (three credits) or
  • Course approved by Chair or designee

***The student has the option of taking two credits of CHEM 333 - Organic Chemistry Majors Laboratory I  (laboratory and lecture) and not taking CHEM 445 - Physical Chemistry Laboratory I  

Technical Electives:


Students must complete a minimum of 21 credits of General Technical and Chemical Engineering Elective courses.

  • The student must take four General Technical Electives (12 credits) and three Chemical Engineering Electives (nine credits) OR
  • Take three General Technical Electives (nine credits) and four Chemical Engineering Electives (12 credits).

General Technical Electives:


The purpose of the technical electives is to advance the scientific or engineering background of the chemical engineers. The technical electives program consists of a minimum of nine credits taken from the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences (see General Technical Electives for Chemical Engineering Majors ). At least two courses (six credits) must be at the intermediate level (generally 300-600). Students should select their technical electives in the spring of sophomore year to avoid scheduling conflicts. Students should formulate an academic plan for their technical and Chemical Engineering electives with the assistance of their academic advisor.

Chemical Engineering Electives:


The curriculum provides three Chemical Engineering Electives  in the senior year. In addition, the student can exchange one of the General Technical Electives provided in the senior year for a Chemical Engineering Elective. These courses are intended to provide some flexibility in selecting a Chemical Engineering program at the advanced level. Students should decide with the assistance of their advisor if they should conduct a program of independent research and then choose their course elective(s). Only six credits may be taken as research credit fulfilling the Chemical Engineering Elective requirements.

Electives:


After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
