INTRODUCTION
The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program trains qualified college students to earn commissions as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force while completing their university course requirements. Commissioning follows the awarding of a University bachelor’s degree and completion of Air Force ROTC requirements. Those who have a bachelor’s degree and are enrolled in graduate courses may also be eligible. Questions concerning applicant qualifications should be directed to the unit’s admissions officer. Additional information is available at AFROTC-UD128@udel.edu or (302) 831-2863.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE
- Develop Air and Space Force leaders of character whom we expect to fight and win our Nation’s wars.
DEPARTMENTAL STANDARDS
AFROTC students pursuing a commission as an Air or Space Force officer are known as cadets. Cadets must maintain all AFROTC academic standards, fitness requirements and medical requirements to complete the program. Additional information on AFROTC requirements is available at https://www.afrotc.com/what-it-takes/.
Non-Cadets do not have to meet the additional AFROTC standards and requirements.
DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Students in any major with equal to or less than four years, but more than three remaining until graduation may join the program. These students will enter the appropriate General Military Course class based on their projected graduation date.
Programs
General Military Course (GMC)
The first two years, the GMC, provides a general introduction to the Air Force and the various career fields. Students enrolled in the GMC who are not receiving an Air Force scholarship incur no obligation to the Air Force and may elect to discontinue the program at any time.
Professional Officer Course (POC)
The final two years, the POC, concentrates on developing leadership and management skills. Additionally, students study American defense policy. Students must compete for entry into the POC. If accepted, they must attend field training at Maxwell Air Force base during the summer prior to their first POC semester. When they return to the university in the fall, they are placed under contract with the Air Force to complete the program and serve a minimum of four years on active duty. Pilot, Navigator, Nurse and Air Battle Manager candidates incur an additional obligation because of specialized training following commissioning. Additional information is available at AFROTC-UD128@udel.edu or (302) 831-2863.
Curriculum
Academic Courses
The AFROTC courses are sequenced by subject area.
- AS100, “Heritage and Values,” is a survey course designed to introduce students to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) and provides an overview of the basic characteristics, missions, communications and organization of the Air and Space Forces.
- AS200, “Leadership Foundation,” provides a fundamental understanding of both leadership and team building. The lessons and course flow are designed to prepare students for field training and leadership positions in the detachment.
- AS300, “Leading People,” utilizes student’s field training experience to take a more in-depth look at leadership. Special emphasis is placed on enhancing communication skills, and why that is important as a leader. Students have an opportunity to try out these leadership and management techniques in a supervised environment as juniors and seniors.
- AS400, “National Security,” is designed for college seniors and provides them the foundation to understand their role as military officers and how they are directly tied to our National Security Strategy. It is an overview of the complex social and political issues facing the military profession and requires a measure of sophistication commensurate with the senior college level.
In addition to the appropriate level AFROTC academic course, cadets are required to take a two-hour leadership laboratory every semester and participate in physical fitness training twice a week. This requirement does not apply to non-cadets.
Aerospace Military Leadership Minor
A minor in Aerospace Military Leadership may be earned by a student in any University bachelor’s degree program. To earn the Minor, a student must successfuly complete a minimum of 16 credits of coursework with a minimum grade of C- in each course. Additional information is available at AFROTC-UD128@udel.edu or (302) 831-2863.
