UD’s hospitality majors offer a comprehensive education encompassing both data-driven analysis and hands-on experience. The Hospitality and Event Experience Management degree appeals to those who prefer practical application and the Hospitality and Industry Management degree focuses on quantitative and analytical skills.

Hospitality and Event Experience Management 

The degree in Hospitality and Event Experience Management combines business management with specialized courses for the hospitality and event industriesis aimed to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge required to design and execute a wide range of hospitality and event experiences. Graduates merge business-oriented acumen with creative thinking to grow as leaders, whether they want to manage a hotel, open a restaurant, plan weddings, or organize international sporting events.At the end of the program, graduates will emerge with a business-oriented mindset while also employing creative thinking, design, and related capabilities to grow as leaders in the hospitality and event sectors of the industry. The major has two concentrations, and the   students must select one: (1) Hospitality Business Management, or (2) Event Management. 

The major prioritizes hands-on learning, and students benefit from experience-driven courses taught in award-winning learning laboratories such as Vita Nova, the student-operated fine dining restaurant, and the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel.

Hospitality Industry Management 

The degree in Hospitality and Industry Management prepares students for careers in hospitality consulting, real estate development, and corporate services. This customizable degree emphasizes developing analytical skills for decision making in a variety of hospitality business environments. Students have the opportunity to engage with  Students identify a customized focus area that provides a set of core competencies in their area of interest. A specific course plan for the fulfillment of the focus area requirement must be established during the freshman or sophomore year in collaboration withand must be approved by the HSIM advisor. Examples of focus areas include revenue management, real estate development, e-commerce, service marketing, and sustainability management. Additionally, this major emphasizes experiential learning, and students benefit from required paid industry experience outside of the classroom.

Sport Management

The BS in Sports Management prepares students for career opportunities in the sports industry. The majority of those opportunities are in the areas of sales and marketing, leadership and management, finance, and operations within the sports industry. An integral part of the curriculum is the Sport Management Capstone Internship. Students will complete 450 hours at a pre-approved sport related internship site. 

4+1 Program: Undergraduate + Accelerated Graduate Degrees

Students in the Hospitality and Event Experience Management and Hospitality Industry Management majors have the opportunity to participate in a 4+1 MBA program.  With careful planning, academically eligible students can complete both their undergraduate degree and the MBA degree in five years of academic study. Interested students should contact their academic advisor for specific curriculum information.

Minors

The minor in Beverage Management explores the sophisticated and diverse beverage industry. Students will be prepared to work in beverage distribution, hotel or resort beverage management, bar or nightclub management and in specialty areas such as wine and craft brewing/distilling.

The minor in Event Management provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan conferences, meetings, weddings, trade shows, and sports tournaments, hosted all over the world.

The minor in Gastronomy and Cuisine caters to students seeking to explore the role of food in business on a deeper level. This program merges culinary insight with essential business skills, focusing on food economics, marketing, and management in a global context. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how culinary trends are shaped, and benefit from hands-on experience at Vita Nova, the university’s award-winning student-operated fine-dining restaurant and laboratory.

The minor in Restaurant Management provides a foundation in the global food and beverage industry, including entrepreneurship, accounting, and cost controls. This minor focuses on hands-on education, including experiential learning lab classes.

The minor in Spa and Wellness Management provides tools that prepare students for careers in the healthcare and wellness industry, with opportunities in management, sales and marketing, consultation and entrepreneurship.

The minor in Sport Management exposes students to concepts and career possibilities in the sports industry. It allows students to supplement their major degrees with a program that exposes them to concepts and career possibilities in the sport industry. The minor prepares students to manage and lead in the growing field of sport management while merging foundational business principles with concepts related directly to the distinct industry of sport. The required courses serve to provide students a foundation in the different sectors of the sport industry, while the elective courses offer more in-depth exploration of various segments of the sport industry such as promotions, media relations, legal studies, facility/event management and several others. The coursework and learning experience of the minor complement the overall academic experience for students in a variety of majors. The minor is open to all UD majors outside Lerner College of Business.
