Program Overview

The Winterthur Program in American Material Culture is a two-year program leading to a Master of Arts. The Program provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of American decorative arts and material culture-defined as the history and philosophy of people and their things. The Program is a cooperative effort of the Winterthur Museum, and the University. Related areas are American fine and decorative arts, social and cultural history, literature, and museum studies. The Program teaches research strategies for analyzing materials, processes, and design, and for interpreting their cultural meanings and contexts. Resources include the extraordinary object and library collections at the Winterthur Museum, special collections-including digital media-at the University of Delaware, and field-based learning in the U.S. and Great Britain.

Requirements For Admission

Students who are interested in graduate work in this field must apply for appointment as Winterthur Fellows. Application is made through the Office of Graduate and Professional Education at the University of Delaware.

Admission is competitive. Those who meet stated minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed admission, nor are those who fail to meet those requirements necessarily precluded from admission if they offer other appropriate strengths. All students go through a two-step screening process in which a final group of candidates must attend Interview Weekend at the Museum, generally scheduled on the 2nd or 3rd weekend in March. Reasonable costs for attending Interview Weekend are covered by the Museum.

Winterthur Fellowships

All admitted students receive a fellowship which provides full tuition and an annual stipend. Application for the Program and these fellowships is done on line. Consult the Program’s website (http://www.winterthurprogram.udel.edu/application/) for current information. In order to be considered, all application materials, including the GRE scores, must be received no later than January 15 of the year for which admission is desired. Admission is by fellowship only.
