Introduces students to historiography using the lens of narrative. Each semester will focus on critical themes that allow for the exploration of major historical eras, individuals, styles, and trends within the commercial popular music industry centered in the United States from the nineteenth-century to the present, including blues, jazz, country, rock, hip-hop, and others. Special attention will be given to the impact that issues of race, gender, class, and sexuality have on our construction and understanding of music history.
