4+1 Program in Teaching English as a Second Language

The English/Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) 4+1 program allows students to earn the B.A. English and M.A. TESL in a total of five years of full-time study. All requirements for both degree programs must be satisfied. The graduate course requirements for the 4+1 program are the same as those for the traditional M.A. TESL program (33 credits). See program pages for each degree for a full list of requirements.

Students apply and are admitted to the 4+1 program as juniors (before they graduate) but cannot remain in the program unless they earn a B.A. in English. Students should consult with their advisor early in the program to ensure they choose appropriate coursework. A maximum of 12 credits of graduate course work (600 level and above) taken while an undergraduate may be “dual-counted” toward the Bachelor’s and the Master’s degrees: EDUC 672, EDUC 740, LING 676, and either LING 677 or EDUC 741. The remaining courses are taken during the fifth (graduate) year of the program. Students have the option to pursue certification as Teachers of English Learners or Bilingual Teachers through the program.
