Nonprofit Management Essentials Certificate


Program Abstract


Since 1990, the Center for Community Research and Service has been providing comprehensive professional development programs for nonprofit and community leaders.   Developed and launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nonprofit Management Essentials Program is a comprehensive professional development program designed to equip emerging leaders with the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the nonprofit sector. This all virtual program is tailored for individuals who are in the early to mid-stages of their careers within the nonprofit field, providing them with a solid foundation to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities of mission-driven organizations.  FORMAT: Online - includes both synchronous and asynchronous content.

Key Components:

  1. Introduction to Nonprofit Sector: Gain an overview of the nonprofit landscape, including the history, values, and importance of the sector in addressing societal needs.
  2. Board Governance Basics: Explore the fundamentals of effective nonprofit governance structures, roles and responsibilities of board members, and policies/practices crucial for successful leadership.
  3. Strategic Planning and Mission Alignment: Develop skills in strategic thinking, planning, and aligning organizational goals with mission statements to drive impact and sustainability.
  4. Financial Fundamentals: Explore the foundational principles of nonprofit finance, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting, to establish a solid understanding of financial management basics.
  5. Fundraising and Resource Development: Acquire practical knowledge in fundraising techniques, donor engagement, and grant writing to secure financial resources vital for organizational growth.
  6. Staff and Volunteer Management and Collaboration: Enhance supervision and team management skills, fostering a collaborative and inclusive organizational culture for increased productivity and mission fulfillment.
  7. Communication and Marketing: Develop effective communication strategies to convey your organization’s mission, engage stakeholders, and advocate for positive change within the community.
