Program Abstract

Professional & Continuing Studies, (PCS), in partnership with UD’s Department of Medical & Molecular Sciences, the noncredit Forensic Science pre-college program will be taught by both UD faculty and forensic experts specializing in crime scene investigation and toxicology. During this week-long program, students will gain hands-on experience and the practical knowledge and skills essential for working as a forensic scientist in their everyday casework. Students will delve into the core principles of forensic science through a combination of conceptual understanding and hands-on experiential learning. In addition, students will participate in field study by taking a trip and visiting multiple state agencies in Delaware, such as the Division of Forensic Science in Wilmington Delaware, Troop 3 and Delaware State Crime Lab, both located in Dover.

All hands-on activities will be performed under the guidance of UD faculty and forensic experts from the Medical and Molecular Sciences Department at UD’s state of the art teaching laboratories.

This noncredit program will conclude with group capstone presentations to a panel of visiting forensic science experts from the Division of Forensic Science and Delaware State Police. Each group will present a “court ready” report from one of the program’s hands-on labs. They will discuss the purpose of the assay (test performed) and outline the procedure, including pictures and quality control documentation. They will conclude with the results of the assay and its accuracy based on the knowledge obtained from the program.

One of the program’s internal goals is to serve as an undergraduate pipeline for UD. The program is intentionally designed to end with a departmental presentation including students and their parents on Friday, followed by an information session and a campus tour led by Admissions. The program aims to provide a realistic preview of what attending UD will look and feel like in a few years.
