Human Nutrition - Thesis (MS)

Program Educational Goals


After successfully completing the MSHN thesis option the student will be able to:

  1. Apply the advanced knowledge of biochemical, physiological, and molecular aspects of macronutrients to human health.
  2. Apply the advanced knowledge of biochemical, physiological, and molecular aspects of micronutrients to human health.
  3. Determine appropriate study designs and the role that each contributes to the overall body of knowledge.
  4. Use and interpret statistical methods to evaluate data and literature.
  5. Demonstrate oral and written proficiency in sharing research knowledge.
  6. Hypothesize and evaluate a research question on a nutrition-related topic.

Requirements For The Degree


Students accepted into the program may opt to pursue either the Thesis or Non-Thesis option for the MS in Human Nutrition

Thesis Option


The Thesis Option requires the courses below and:

  • completion and submission of a thesis
  • satisfactory performance on the oral thesis defense exam
  • presentation of the thesis in seminar format to the department faculty.

Prerequisites:

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Human or Animal Physiology
  • Human Nutrition (requiring biochemistry as a prerequisite)

Minimum Admission Requirements:

  • Overall undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher;
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher in major;
  • For international students who do not apply for a teaching assistantship, a TOEFL score of 575 or higher (paper-based), TOEFL iBT of 90 or higher, or IELTS of 6.5 is required. International students applying for a teaching assistantship must have a paper-based TOEFL score of 600 or higher, TOEFL iBT of 100 or higher or IELTS of 7.0

Students must successfully complete the Thesis Defense/Oral Exam as part of the requirements for the MS in Human Nutrition.
