Program Educational Goals


The MA Degree in Italian Studies with a 4+1 option focuses on developing an interdisciplinary field of study that will allow students to enter the work force with a greater depth of linguistic competency and cultural sensitivity. The degree also prepares and qualifies students for doctoral studies in Italian literature, culture, film, and language. This graduate program contributes to the University of Delaware’s mission of fostering students as citizens, scholars, and professionals in a global and diverse society.

 The educational program goals include the following:

Goals for Language Proficiency.

  • Demonstrate a high level of competency in written and oral Italian communication, approximating or exceeding ACTFL language proficiency standards at the level of Advanced-low or higher
  • If student choses to write the mandatory thesis in Italian, demonstrate a high level of competency with Italian syntax and lexical expression

Goals for Literature and Culture Appreciation/Analysis:

  • Critically analyze canonical texts in Italian literature and culture and situate them within the context of literary and cultural movements
  • Apply relevant theoretical frameworks to the analysis of primary texts and cultural artifacts
  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of Italian culture, literature, and history
