Program Educational Goals:
M.S. program
The M.S. program in Human Development and Family Sciences is designed to be a professional program that prepares students to enter positions as leaders in early childhood, human development, human services and related fields.
Students will:
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of theories and social issues including a focus on equity and diversity on human development and family sciences.
- Apply theory and research to practice as they relate to the issues in the field of HDFS.
- Conduct scholarly or practical work to explore issues in the field of HDFS.

Requirements for the Degree
Requirements:
The MS program in Human Development and Family Sciences focuses on the relationship of the family and its members to other systems across the life span. The minimum total credits for the MS in Human Development and Family Sciences is 30. Requirements are listed below.
Note:
** Courses must be focused on the delivery of services to individuals and disabilities or in risk situations and/or their families. These services can include residential, employment, health and medical, transportation, family support or other specific services.
Master’s program timelines:
Timelines:
- Completion of required course work. Including interest electives are chosen by the student in consultation with the student’s advisor and committee.
- A written proposal for the thesis is defended before the student’s committee. The committee consists of a student’s advisor and two members of the HDFS faculty. In addition, the student may choose a committee member from outside the department.
- Defense: A presentation and oral defense is required for all the thesis.
