Exceptional Children and Youth - Elementary Special Education - 4+1 ELEM (BSEd/MEd)

Program Educational Goals

These goals are derived from the Council for Exceptional Children’s Professional Preparation Standards. By the end of the program, graduates will have demonstrated the ability to:

1. Engage in professional learning and culturally responsive practice that adheres to ethical guidelines.

2. Understand and address the developmental and learning needs of elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

3. Develop instructional plans for elementary students with high incidence disabilities that demonstrate subject matter content and specialized curricular knowledge.

4. Engage in data-based decision making based on assessments conducted to understand the strengths and needs of elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

5. Make evidence-informed instructional decisions to support student learning.

6. Support the social, emotional, and behavioral growth of all students.

7. Collaborate with families and other team members to plan programs and to access services for elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

8. Seek out and use professional development opportunities in practicum sites to enhance knowledge and skills in special education, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning.
