Educational Technology (MEd)

Program Educational Goals:


  1. Apply functional knowledge in technology integration for the purpose of helping people learn.
  2. Develop awareness of and ability to deploy the standards frameworks created by the ed tech field’s professional organizations.
  3. Demonstrate both a theoretical and a practical grounding in educational technology methods and techniques, emphasizing theories of teaching and learning that support these methods.
  4. Exhibit a disposition for continued professional development and awareness of emerging technologies in expanding technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge as the field evolves.
  5. Demonstrate mastery of the educational technology program’s goals by creating a capstone ePortfolio assessed by rubrics developed according to standards of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) or the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), depending on the candidate’s career path.

Requirements for the Degree:


The Master of Education in Educational Technology requires 33 credits of graduate-level coursework. All courses to be applied to the degree must have a grade of B- or above.

Core Courses:


6 credits. Ground the candidate in curriculum, technology and cognition.

Specialization Courses:


9 credits. Introduce the candidate to the field of educational technology and provide authentic practice in multimedia and Internet technologies.

Restricted Electives:


12-18 credits. Provide practical experience with emerging technologies, mobile web design, eLearning, assistive technology, and e-book authoring and publishing. Elective course numbers include the list below. Electives should be chosen in collaboration with the student’s faculty advisor. 

Capstone ePortfolio or Thesis:


0-6 credits. In order to graduate, students are required to submit a Capstone ePortfolio or complete a 6-credit curriculum research project with approval of their advisor, leading to a master’s thesis. Thesis candidates typically enroll in 6 credits of Master’s Thesis after completing 12 credits of the restricted electives listed above. Most candidates exit the program without writing a thesis by submitting their Capstone ePortfolio after taking 18 credits of the restricted electives listed above.
