Human Services - Pre-Social Work/Counseling Concentration (BS)

Program Educational Goals
Students who successfully complete the Human Services - Pre-Social Work/Counseling concentration will be able to:
1. Employ theoretical knowledge and practical skills to meet the needs of individuals and
families in a variety of community settings.
2. Conduct or utilize family studies research.
3. Describe a variety of prevention, intervention, and policy approaches in human services.
4. Describe and plan approaches to work with families and policymakers to alleviate and
cope with complex social problems in a variety of contexts.
5. Apply theory, research, and best practices in real-world contexts during internship
placements.

Major Requirements:
Some University requirements may be met by Major requirements. Major Breadth Requirements:
- Three-credit ENGL course, including cross-lists
- One Creative Arts and Humanities course
or - Foreign Language course (CHIN, FREN, GREK, GRMN, HEBR, ITAL, JAPN, LATN, PORT, RUSS, or SPAN) if Creative Arts and Humanities requirement is fulfilled by English Literature course
- Three-credit Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology course or MATH113 or higher
Laboratory Science
Complete a four-credit Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology course (with lab) from the following:

Human Services Core
Minimum grade C- in all HDFS courses and restricted electives. A student failing to meet the minimum required grade of C- when taking a major course for the second time may not be permitted to remain in an HDFS major requiring that course. Students may appeal this decision.

Complete twelve credits taken from any of the approved area of interest lists below or other course(s) approved by an advisor. The below interest areas may be expanded to to view eligible courses and see coursework currently counting toward the requirement. Students may choose courses from multiple interest areas and are not restricted to the courses within one area of interest. Restricted Electives may be fulfilled with a minor. Minors may include, but are not limited to, psychology, public policy, criminal justice, disabilities studies, medical social services, women’s studies, sociology. Related electives may be necessary to complete 12 credits. See department for more information.

After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credits required for the degree. Only four credits of Music ensemble (MUSC 112, 119, 120, 123, 124, 430, 460, 461, 462, 463, 470, 471, 472, 473, 474, 476, 477, 478, 620, 630, 643) and four credits of 100- and 200-level courses in MLSC/AFSC may be counted toward the degree.
