Program Educational Goals
These goals are derived from the Council for Exceptional Children’s Professional Preparation Standards. By the end of the program, graduates will have demonstrated the ability to:

Engage in professional learning and culturally responsive practice that adheres to ethical guidelines.

Understand and address the developmental and learning needs of elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

Develop instructional plans for elementary students with high incidence disabilities that demonstrate subject matter content and specialized curricular knowledge.

Engage in data-based decision making based on assessments conducted to understand the strengths and needs of elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

Make evidence-informed instructional decisions to support student learning.

Support the social, emotional, and behavioral growth of all students.

Collaborate with families and other team members to plan programs and to access services for elementary students with high incidence disabilities.

Seek out and use professional development opportunities in practicum sites to enhance knowledge and skills in special education, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning.
Program Requirements:
Open to students with ETE majors with middle school concentrations or any of the secondary education majors from Arts & Sciences.
Choose a concentration:
Students choose one the following three concentrations: Elementary special education, secondary special education, or autism/severe disabilities.
Elementary Special Education Concentration:
Students in the elementary special education concentration complete the following required courses (33 credits):
- EDUC 653 - Assistive Technology: Hgh Incidence Disabilities (3cr.)
- EDUC 673 - School-to-Adult Life Transitions and Disability (3cr.)
- EDUC 679 - Special Education Instruction & Curriculum: Advanced (3cr.)
- EDUC 680 - Educational Evaluation: Exceptional Children and Youth (3cr.)
- EDUC 681 - Techniques for Behavior Change and Positive Behavior Support (3cr.)
- EDUC 682 - Special Issues in Special Education (3cr.)
- EDUC 745 - Collaborative Teaming in Special Education (3cr.)
- EDUC 754 - Special Education Instruction and Curriculum: Elementary (3cr.)
- EDUC 750 - Graduate Teaching Internship (3 to 9cr.)
- EDUC 757 - Diagnosis & Instruction In Literacy (3cr.)
Senior Year Requirements:
During the Senior year, they complete 9 graduate credits that may be in lieu of 9 undergraduate credits and complete all remaining undergraduate requirements, including the student teaching experience. During the +1 year, students complete 24 graduate credits, which includes 6 credits of graduate teaching internship (EDUC 750).
Final Paper requirement:
Complete a non-course Final Paper requirement.
