Asian Studies (BA)


Program Educational Goals:


Students graduated with Asian Studies BA will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Engagement with the histories of Asia and Asian cultures.
  2. An appreciation for the diversity of the people of Asia and their communities.
  3. Skills necessary to interpreting Asian arts, cultures, histories, and societies.
  4. Basic proficiency in communication in one or more Asian languages.
  5. Respect for the beliefs, values, and traditions common to Asian communities.

College Breadth Requirements:


The College Breadth requirements are in addition to the University Breadth requirement. Up to three credits from each of the University Breadth Requirement categories may be used to simultaneously satisfy these College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements. Minimum grade C- required for courses used to satisfy College Breadth.

*If the grade earned is sufficient, a course may be applied toward more than one requirement (e.g., breadth and major requirements), but the credits are counted only once toward the total credits for graduation. If all but one course in a group has been taken in one department or program, a course cross-listed with that program will not satisfy the distribution requirement.

Foreign Language:


  • Completion of the intermediate-level course (107 or 202) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of D-.
    • The number of credits (0-12) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
    • Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination  through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.

Mathematics:


The math requirement must be completed by the time a student has earned 60 credits. Students who transfer into the College of Arts and Sciences with 45 credits or more must complete this requirement within two semesters.

Successful completion of any 200-level or higher mathematics course except: MATH 201 , MATH 202 , MATH 205 , MATH 251 , MATH 252 , MATH 253 , and MATH 266 .

Option Four:


  • Successful performance on a proficiency test in mathematics administered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences (0 credits awarded).

Second Writing Requirement:


A Second Writing Requirement  approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed.

Major Requirements:


A minimum grade of C- is required in all courses (30-34 credits).

Part 1: Asia-Related Content Coursework (30 credits)

The major consists of 30 credits of Asia-related coursework from the following list of approved courses or cross-listed courses. (Students must take courses from at least three departments.)

  • Four courses at the 100 or 200-level (12 credits)
  • Three courses at the 300-level (9 credits)
  • Two courses at the 400-level (6 credits)

Asian-Studies Capstone: 400-level course from the approved list below (3 credits) or senior thesis (with a minimum of 3 credits from UNIV401/402).

Part 2: Familiarity with Asian language(s) (0-4 credits)

In addition to completing the above coursework, students are required to demonstrate sufficient familiarity with Asian language(s).****

This requirement can be fulfilled with one of the following three options.

A) An Asian language course at the 107 level: CHIN107, JAPN107, or KORE 107 (0-4); Student with credits from another institution at a level higher than CHIN107, JAPN107, or KORE 107 may request a formal waiver of this 107-level language requirement.

B) Intermediate level of proficiency (107 level) in an Asian language including CHIN, JAPN, KORE.****

C) Three courses of any CHIN, JAPN, or KORE at 105 or 106 levels, either within one language or a combination of two or more languages.*****

Approved Courses for Asia-related Content Coursework:

***This course is also approved to fulfill the University-level requirement of capstone experience.

****Asian languages defined in the Asian Studies curriculum include Asian languages taught at the University of Delaware; for students seeking certification for languages not taught at the University of Delaware, they need to contact the Asian Studies program’s director to request for assessment and approval.

*****Students seeking to fulfill the Asian language requirement with Option C may contact the Asian Studies program’s director to request for credits from this requirement to count toward the Asia-related content up to the maximum of 2 courses at the 100 level.  

For approval of Asia-related Independent Studies, Special Problems and Topics Courses, Experimental Courses, and for course substitutions in all the Asian Studies degree programs, please contact the Director before registering for them.

With the agreement from the major’s advisor, an Internship course such as ARTH464 may be used to count toward degree completion in Asian studies and fulfill the DLE requirement.

Courses cross-listed with Asian-studies approved courses that are listed above may also count toward Asian studies requirements.

For students completing senior thesis UNIV401/UNIV402, three of the six credit hours of thesis (UNIV401/402) would count toward the Asian Studies capstone (3 credits) and the other three credit hours (UNIV401/402) would be in addition to the 30 or 34 credit hours required for the major, to yield a total of 33 or 37 credit hours.

Electives:


After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
