Neuroscience (BS)


Program Educational Goals:


Knowledge base in neuroscience

  1. Students will acquire basic knowledge of theory and research in four general domains:
    • Development, structure, and function of the nervous system
    • Cellular and molecular biology of the nervous system
    • Systems and behavioral approaches to neuroscience
    • Integration of neuroscience with knowledge of fields that intersect with neuroscience
  2. Students will be exposed to cross-cutting themes in neuroscience:
    • Interactions between environment and heredity
    • Models and mechanisms
    • Historical influences

Scientific Thinking Skills: Analysis and Synthesis

  1. Students will read and critically analyze primary empirical research 
  2. Students will demonstrate abilities in scientific inquiry, such as:
    • hypothesis development
    • experimental design
    • data analysis and interpretation
    • research ethics

Scientific Presentation Skills

  1. Students will present scientific information in an organized and coherent manner, for scientific and lay audiences, in both oral and written formats.
  2. Students will demonstrate effective visual presentation of data and preparation of figures.

Mathematics:


  • MATH course approved to satisfy requirement.

Foreign Language:


  • Completion of the intermediate-level course (107,112, or 202) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of D-.
    • The number of credits (0-12) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
      • Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination  through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.

College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements:


The College Breadth Requirements are taken in addition to the University Breadth Requirement. Up to three credits from each of the University Breadth Requirement categories may be used to simultaneously satisfy these College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements. College Breadth courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C-.

A total of 18 credits from Groups A, B, and C is required with a minimum of six credits in each group. The six credits from each group could be from the same area.

Second Writing Requirement:


A Second Writing Requirement  approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed.

Major Requirements:


Double majors in Psychology and Neuroscience can count a maximum of four courses from the NSCI and PSYC subject areas toward both majors.

Note:


**MATH 115 , MATH 117 , MATH 221 , or MATH 241  are prerequisites for PHYS 201  and PHYS 202 , but pre-med students and students interested in pursuing computational neuroscience and/or neurophysiology are strongly encouraged to take MATH 221 . Students wishing to satisfy the pre-med requirements should consult those requirements in choosing options and in choosing additional courses in related sciences and general education courses.

  • PSYC 300-level and above Prerequisites: PSYC 100 , PSYC 209  
  • NSCI 600-level and above Prerequisites:  NSCI 320  
  • BISC 300-level and above Prerequisites: BISC 207 , BISC 208  +1 year of chemistry
  • BISC 600-level and above Prerequisites: BISC 207 , BISC 208  +2 year of chemistry

Electives:


After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
