Early Childhood Education (BS)


University Requirements:


Additional Breadth Requirements:


  • Three credits of Creative Arts and Humanities
    OR
  • Three credit Foreign Language course (CHIN, FREN, GREK, GRMN, HEBR, ITAL, JAPN, LATN, PORT, RUSS, or SPAN if Creative Arts and Humanities requirement is fulfilled by an English literature course)
     
  • Six credits of History and Cultural Change (three credits of this requirement fulfills the University History and Cultural Change requirement)
  • Three credits of Social and Behavioral Science (fulfills the University Social and Behavioral Sciences requirements)
  • Two four-credit courses from Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology (courses with labs)

Prerequisites for EDUC 400 Student Teaching:


GPA 2.50 and a major field index of 2.75 (Information on courses designated in major field is available from Department Office) and a minimum grade of C- in all HDFS courses, EDUC 230 , and EDUC 210 .

Praxis Test Requirements


ECE students must complete the following Praxis test requirements:

Praxis Core:

Passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests in reading, writing, and mathematics according to the State of Delaware guidelines.

Praxis II:

Proof of having taken and passed the Praxis II tests that are required for State of Delaware teacher certification in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Students must pass these Praxis II tests according to the State of Delaware guidelines in order to earn institutional recommendation for teacher certification. This institutional recommendation is noted on students’ transcripts and is needed to apply for teacher certification in Delaware and other states.

Electives:


After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credits required for the degree.

Only four credits of Music ensemble and four credits of 100-200 level courses in Military Science/ Army ROTC may be counted toward the degree.

Credits to Total a Minimum of 120
