Elementary Teacher Education/Exceptional Children and Youth 4+1 (BSEd/MEd)

4 + 1 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION IN ELEMENTARY TEACHER EDUCATION/MASTERS OF EDUCATION IN EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Students have the opportunity to complete a traditional four-year bachelor’s program plus a master’s program in one additional (+1) year a 4+1 program.

Due dates for receipt of completed applications is December 15 of junior year for admission in the subsequent Fall semester.

Autism/Severe Disabilities: UD students in the early childhood education major or elementary teacher education major/special education concentration can become eligible for teacher certification in autism/severe disabilities and earn the M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth in the +1 year.

Elementary Special Education: UD students in secondary education majors or the elementary teacher education major/English as a Second Language or middle school concentrations can become eligible for teacher certification in special education and earn the M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth in the +1 year.

Secondary Special Education: UD students in secondary education majors or the elementary teacher education major/middle school concentrations can become eligible for teacher certification in special education and earn the M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth in the +1 year.

Requirements in the 4+1 tracks include:

Students choose one the following three concentrations: elementary special education, secondary special education, or autism/severe disabilities.
During the Senior year, they complete 9 graduate credits that may be in lieu of 9 undergraduate credits and complete all remaining undergraduate requirements, including the student teaching experience. During the +1 year, students complete 24 graduate credits, which includes 6 credits of graduate teaching internship (EDUC 750).
Students in the autism/severe disabilities concentration complete the following required courses (33 credits): EDUC 624, EDUC 625, EDUC 626, EDUC 655, EDUC 669, EDUC 673, EDUC 681, EDUC 682, EDUC 745 and EDUC750. Students in the elementary special education concentration complete the following required courses (33 credits): EDUC 653, EDUC 673, EDUC 679, EDUC 680, EDUC 681, EDUC 682, EDUC 745, EDUC 754, EDUC750 and EDUC 757. Students in the secondary special education concentration complete the following required courses (33 credits) in addition to EDUC 415: EDUC 653, EDUC 658, EDUC 673, EDUC 674, EDUC 680, EDUC 681, EDUC 682,EDUC 745, EDUC750 and EDUC 757. Complete a non-course Final Paper requirement.
