Anthropology explores what it means to be human and how humans have existed in different places and times. Anthropology is unique in bridging the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences to explore human life in the fullest sense. Our department covers the discipline’s main subfields (applied, archaeology, biological, cultural), and we have a special emphasis on professional development and career readiness to prepare students for a wide range of pathways after college.

We offer a major and minor in Anthropology, and for students interested in becoming teachers, we also offer a major in Anthropology Education. In addition, we offer three specialized major concentrations and minors for students interested in more tailored experiences: 1) Culture, Medicine, and Health; 2) Human Rights and Global Instabilities; 3) Material Culture, Technology, and Design.

One of the things that sets us apart as a department and makes us a leading undergraduate program is mentorship. We offer small seminar classes in which students learn as peers and work closely with faculty. UD anthropology students also pursue an array of unique experiential-learning opportunities outside the classroom to enrich their education and help them develop skills and credentials. Museum collections. Study abroad programs. Archaeology field schools. Independent research projects. Internships. Teaching Assistantships. Research Assistantships. Professional conferences. UD Anthropology Club. Community engagement.
