The School of Education offers a major in Elementary Teacher Education and minors in Educational Studies, Educational Technology, and Race, Culture, and Equity in Education. An Honors Degree option is available for the major.
The Elementary Teacher Education program is nationally accredited and prepares outstanding elementary, middle school, and special education teachers to meet the challenges of educating today’s diverse student population. Elementary Teacher Education students can become eligible for teacher certification in elementary education and in the area of their concentration. They choose a concentration in one of the following six areas: English as a Second Language, Middle School Mathematics, Middle School English, Middle School Science, Middle School Social Studies, or Special Education.
Elementary Teacher Education students actively engage in field experiences beginning in their freshmen year. They work with diverse populations in a variety of settings prior to the two-semester student teaching experience. The General Studies, Professional Studies, and Concentration courses provide students with the content and pedagogical knowledge needed to be successful classroom teachers.
A minimum grade of C- is required in all courses in the major. Elementary Teacher Education students must be cleared for Upper Division Clearance prior to taking upper-level education courses in their junior year, and the requirements for this clearance are available www.education.udel.edu/ete/upper-division-clearance/.
The Educational Studies minor provides students with the opportunity to learn about the field of education. Students examine ideas and issues within the areas of American education, special education, cultural diversity, and the development of students. Please note that this minor does not lead to teacher certification and the minor is not open to students in the Elementary Teacher Education major.
Learning how to use technology to improve results has become strategically important across all sectors of education and training. Therefore, the minor in Educational Technology is open to all students in any University bachelor’s degree program. The coursework provides students with a theoretical grounding and practical experience using technology to improve teaching and learning in real-world situations. Although the courses are technologically rich, they extend beyond tools by immersing students in the knowledge base of researched best practices for improving results. In the service-learning capstone course, students form teams to develop a solution to a real-world educational problem in a local school or workplace. By the end of the Minor, students will have created a web portfolio demonstrating the manner in which they meet the national educational technology standards. In order to be eligible to add the Minor, students must have completed 28 credits at the University of Delaware.
The minor in Race, Culture, and Equity in Education provides students with the opportunity to engage deeply in urban education issues within their particular professional interests. Please note that completion of the minor does not lead to teacher certification.
