MUSC 318 - Principles of Ethnomusicology Credit(s): 3 PRINCIPLES OF ETHNOMUSICOLOGY Component: Lecture Explores the definition of, and ways of studying, “music” in the context of world cultures and the various sonic forms around the globe, while introducing multiple ideas, approaches, and methodologies of contemporary ethnomusicology as well as the history of ethnomusicology. Emphasis is placed on what and how the ethnomusicological lens (understood in the broadest terms) could engage students’ own musical and cultural studies, through the practice of several established methodologies such as fieldwork, ethnographic writings, and approaches and attitudes to listening, as well as by discussing the recent developments in ethnomusicology that reflects community and social engagement.
