SOCI 341 - Welfare and Society Credit(s): 3 POLICY AND POVERTY IN THE U.S. Component: Lecture Why is poverty such a persistent feature of US society? Why is the US poverty rate higher than any other advanced democracy? This course examines issues of poverty and public policy in the United States. Students will learn about the causes and consequences of poverty and the policies and programs designed to address it. Topics include: social welfare policies, safety net programs, and other forms of public and private support, as well as housing, work, and families.
