GEOG 352 - Refugees and Forced Migration Credit(s): 3
REFUGEES AND FORCED MIGRATION
Examines social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of refugee crises and forced migration. Topics include the definition of a refugee and what situations are covered by that definition, humanitarianism and global responses to refugees, the securitization of border regimes, the management of refugees in camps and urban areas, climate change induced displacement, and new directions in migration policy worldwide. Case studies are global, with attention to forced migration to and from North America, South America, continental Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. Introduces theoretical approaches from cultural, medical, and political and legal anthropology.
