ANTHROPOLOGY OF HEALTH
Component: Lecture
Conceptualizes health at the crossroads of biology and culture, pathology and person, case and community, experience and world. Emphasizes social, cultural, historical, and structural influences on health alongside clinical medical factors. Covers classic topics such as traditional and alternative medicine, disease versus illness, placebo and nocebo effects, illness narratives, and structural violence. Case studies are drawn from around the world, looking at infectious and chronic disease, diet and nutrition, reproductive health, and mental health, among other topics. Students interested in medicine, public health, nursing, and other health professions have the opportunity to learn frameworks and skills that are crucial for their future work.
