Program Requirements


The 4+1 program allows students the ability to earn an undergraduate teacher education degree and the M.Ed. in Teaching Students with Disabilities in a total of five years of full-time study. 

All requirements for both degree programs must be satisfied. See program pages for each degree for a full list of requirements.

Students apply and are admitted to the 4+1 program as juniors (before they graduate) but cannot remain in the program unless they earn an undergraduate teacher education degree. Students should consult with their advisor early in the program to ensure they choose appropriate coursework. 

A maximum of 9 credits of graduate course work (600 level and above) taken while an undergraduate, may be “dual-counted” toward the Bachelor’s and the Master’s degrees. The total credits required for the 4+1 degree are 33 credits.  

The 4+1 Autism/Severe Disabilities concentration is open to undergraduate education majors pursuing a BS in

  • Elementary and Middle SchoolTeacher Education with a concentration in Elementary Education & Special Education 
  • Early Childhood Education
