Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (MS)

Requirements for the Degree:

The Master of Science (MS) degree in Neuroscience is a degree option for PhD students in good standing who want to obtain a master’s degree in conjunction with their doctoral degree, or for students in good standing who must leave the doctoral program prematurely because of family, health or personal reasons. Students will not be admitted directly into the MS program, since the program requirements are embedded within the PhD requirements.

The Master of Science in Neuroscience follows the first two years of the PhD program and requires a minimum of 30 credits including 12 credits of research or thesis. All students must complete a planned program of study, created with their primary advisor.

Required Courses in Neuroscience:

Nine credits consisting of the following:

NSCI 626 - Advanced Neuroanatomy Credit(s): 3
NSCI 629 - Integrative Neuroscience I Credit(s): 3
NSCI 630 - Integrative Neuroscience II Credit(s): 3

Statistics or Computational Methods:

Three credits of coursework in statistical or computational methods at the 500-level or above. All courses must be approved as part of the student’s program of study.

Approved Statistics or Computational Methods Courses

Electives:

Six credits of elective coursework at the 600-level or above. All courses must be approved as part of the student’s program of study. An appendix to the program policy statement is available for a comprehensive list of possible electives.

Thesis Option:

Twelve credits consisting of six research credits and six thesis credits.

Research credits are typically designated by a course prefix corresponding with the student’s home department and the 868 code.
Thesis credits are typically designated by a course prefix corresponding with the student’s home department and the 869 code.

Non-Thesis Option:

When a non-thesis option has been developed with the advisor and approved by the Executive Committee, the student will replace the six credits of thesis with:

3 credits of research credit and 3 credits of additional coursework, or
6 credits of research credit.

Research credits are typically designated by a course prefix corresponding with the student’s home department and the 868 code.
