Program Goals

Online MEd in Literacy

The MEd in Literacy is designed to prepare teachers to become Reading/Literacy Specialists. Our program goals are aligned with the International Literacy Association’s standards for Reading Professionals. By graduation, students must meet the following goals:

1.     Articulate the central theoretical and empirical foundations of literacy and language.

2.     Create and evaluate evidence-based literacy curricula to meet the needs of all students.

3.     Identify and use appropriate assessment practices to inform instruction.

4.     Apply evidence-based assessment and intervention practices in practicum settings.

5.     Integrate essential concepts of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusivity in classroom environments.

6.     Meet the developmental needs of all learners and enhance engagement and motivation using a variety of print and digital material.

7.     Demonstrate professionalism in the support of students, teachers, families, and policy makers.

Program Requirements:


Note:


There are no elective courses in this program. Additionally, all accepted students must complete a free, non-credit Introduction to Online Learning tutorial and submit a ”certificate of completion” for this tutorial to their advisor prior to starting their first course in the program.

Examinations:


Prior to exit from the program, all candidates are required to earn a passing score on Praxis II Reading Specialist - 20300 test as determined by the Delaware Department of Education certification requirements.
