Music - Performance Concentration (voice) (MM)

Program Educational Goals:


By graduation, students will…

 

Goal 1:

…make functional and stylistic choices at an advanced level reflecting music of the period and genre to be shared in solo performance contexts.

Outcomes:

1.1 Students will prepare repertoire for public performance.

1.2 Students will demonstrate functional technical proficiency as appropriate to their professional aspirations.

1.3 Students will select repertoire to suit the needs of diverse performance contexts.
 

Goal 2

…demonstrate the effective expression of musical and poetic character in solo performance.

Outcomes:

2.1 Students will offer public performances in diverse musical contexts.

2.2 Students will demonstrate poetic comprehension through physical movement and other forms of expressive engagement as appropriate to the context.

2.3 Students will present research on potential narrative and thematic programming constructs.
 

Goal 3:

…perform diverse repertoire with advanced levels of musicianship in large and chamber music ensembles.

Outcomes:

3.1 Students will participate in a large ensemble.

3.2 Students will participate in a chamber ensemble.

3.3 Students will perform chamber music in a public recital.

 

Goal 4

…exhibit awareness of local and global communities within the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility through ethical pedagogical and programming practices.

Outcomes:

4.1 Students will present research on the art song of underrepresented composers.

4.2 Students will present research on the operatic repertoire of underrepresented composers.

4.3 Students will demonstrate the teaching of multiple styles and genres of repertoire for the voice.
 

Goal 5

…apply career development and entrepreneurial skills to market and promote their pedagogical and performance acumen.

Outcomes:

5.1 Students will produce and promote a public recital.

5.2 Students will write compelling proposals for projects, awards, or grants.

5.3 Students will create a portfolio of professional documents.

 

Goal 6

…utilize voice science and related pedagogical concepts in the teaching of voice.

Outcomes:

6.1 Students will present research on topics in the contemporary study of voice pedagogy.

6.2 Students will utilize voice analysis software to observe singing phenomena.

6.3 Students will produce models of voice anatomy and processes.

Requirements for the Master’s Degree


III. Performance Concentration (voice) Courses:


Students are required to complete 34 credit hours (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of B or better) to be granted the degree Master of Music: Performance. All students take the following:

*Although MUSC601 is a variable 1-3 cr. course, it must be taken for 1 cr. to satisfy degree requirement

Other Requirements:


The culmination of the degree is a public recital (MUSC 601 ), which is preceded by an acceptable recital-approval hearing. In addition, toward the end of the course of study, the student must pass an oral examination.
