Music - Performance Concentration: Instrumental (non- keyboard) (MM)

Program Educational Goals:


Goal 1:

Performance Skills.  By graduation, students will be able to perform at the professional level, demonstrating technical precision and expressive artistry.

Outcomes:

1.1  Students will develop and demonstrate advanced performance skills on their primary instrument. 

1.2 Students will demonstrate the flexibility required to perform across varied musical settings as a soloist, chamber musician, or large ensemble performer. 

1.3 Students will apply critical and creative thinking while making stylistic choices and informing artistic expression.

1.4 Students will collaborate and perform diverse repertoires with other musicians. 

 

Goal 2:

Specialization.  By graduation, students will develop an area of specialization within the musical disciplines. 

Outcomes:

2.1 Students will demonstrate expertise in an area of specialization through performance, scholarship, and/or other creative activities. 

 

Goal 3:

Career Management:  By graduation, students will develop non-performance skills that are integral for establishing and maintaining a career in music.

Outcomes:

3.1 Students will be able to utilize relevant and current technology for performance purposes and professional promotion.  

3.2 Students will be able to promote their artistry by creating an online presence through web design and social media.

3.3 Students will be able to effectively communicate with a wide range of audiences using written and oral communication.

3.4 Students will understand how to source funding for artistic projects through grant writing and fundraising.
 

Goal 4:

Pedagogy:  By graduation, students will acquire the pedagogical knowledge necessary to successfully teach their primary instrument to students with varied experience levels.

Outcomes:

4.1 Students will demonstrate knowledge of pedagogical philosophies for teaching technical skills specific to their primary instrument.

4.2 Students will have a deep understanding of the pedagogical and performance repertoire written for their primary instrument. 

4.3 Students will demonstrate the skills necessary for building and maintaining a private teaching studio.

Requirements for the Master’s Degree


I. Performance Concentration: Instrumental (non- keyboard) Courses:


Students are required to complete 37 credit hours (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of B or better) to be granted the degree Master of Music: Performance. All students take the following:

*Although MUSC620 is a 1 cr. course, it must be taken four times to satisfy degree requirements; 4 cr.  MUSC620 required

Other Requirements:


The culmination of the degree is a public recital (MUSC 601 ), which is preceded by an acceptable recital-approval hearing. In addition, toward the end of the course of study, the student must pass an oral examination.
