Citizenship and Democracy Certificate

Students completing the certificate in Citizenship and Democracy are expected to:
- Develop and apply an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of engaged citizenship in democracy.
- Identify and articulate the emergent tensions and tradeoffs among citizens and institutions in democratic societies.
- Develop and refine skills to engage across difference in personal and professional capacities.
- Understand and analyze the form and function of institutions and processes central to democracy.
- Critically assess media systems and their influence on democracy.
- Navigate and evaluate informational environments and discern media quality.
- Apply knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively lead and follow within and across diverse settings.

Certificate Requirements
A total of twelve (12) credits is needed to satisfy four categories of requirements. The certificate is open to ALL undergraduate students. Students must obtain a minimum grade of C- in all courses. Governance and Policy

Students seeking approval for a course substitute must submit a request in writing to the Biden School Director of Undergraduate Studies. The request should indicate the course being proposed as a substitute and address how the course can be expected to convey the content and skills expected from that category.
