Citizenship and Democracy Certificate


Students completing the certificate in Citizenship and Democracy are expected to:

  1. Develop and apply an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of engaged citizenship in democracy.
  2. Identify and articulate the emergent tensions and tradeoffs among citizens and institutions in democratic societies.
  3. Develop and refine skills to engage across difference in personal and professional capacities.
  4. Understand and analyze the form and function of institutions and processes central to democracy.
  5. Critically assess media systems and their influence on democracy.
  6. Navigate and evaluate informational environments and discern media quality.
  7. Apply knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively lead and follow within and across diverse settings.

Certificate Requirements


A total of twelve (12) credits is needed to satisfy four categories of requirements. The certificate is open to ALL undergraduate students. Students must obtain a minimum grade of C- in all courses.

Note:


Students seeking approval for a course substitute must submit a request in writing to the Biden School Director of Undergraduate Studies. The request should indicate the course being proposed as a substitute and address how the course can be expected to convey the content and skills expected from that category.
