Economics (BA)


Program Educational Goals


  • Gain and demonstrate an understanding of foundational economic principles.
  • Enhance critical thinking skills by using economic concepts and models to explain economic behavior and outcomes, to evaluate policy impact, and to propose solution strategies.
  • Develop quantitative reasoning by using econometrics and mathematical approaches to solve models, assess solutions, and interpret empirical evidence.
  • Communicate effectively about economic ideas, issues, and analyses; and develop proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Understand and evaluate economic events and economic policy.

Major Breadth Requirements:


Courses used to fulfill the University Breadth Requirement above may also be used to fulfill the Major Breadth Requirements. Courses used to satisfy breadth requirements may also be used to satisfy major requirements. Minimum grade C- required for all courses used to satisfy the Major Breadth Requirements.

  • Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of Creative Arts and Humanities
  • Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of History and Cultural Change
  • Three credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences (cannot be satisfied by an ECON course, including cross-lists)
  • Seven credits of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology (at least one course must have an associated laboratory). Cannot be satisfied by coursework used to meet the Mathematics & Statistics requirements below. Courses acceptable to satisfy laboratory requirement include:

Second Writing Requirement:


A Second Writing Requirement  approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed. Courses used to satisfy the second writing requirement may also be used to satisfy major requirements.

Foreign Language:


  • Completion of the intermediate-level course (107 or 112) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of C-. Languages include ARAB, CHIN, FREN, GREK, GRMN, HEBR, ITAL, JAPN, KORE, LATN, PORT, RUSS and SPAN. Courses used to satisfy the foreign language requirement may also be used to satisfy major requirements.
    • The number of credits (0-12) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
      • Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination  through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.
