Program Educational Goals
- Gain and demonstrate an understanding of foundational economic principles.
- Enhance critical thinking skills by using economic concepts and models to explain economic behavior and outcomes, to evaluate policy impact, and to propose solution strategies.
- Develop quantitative reasoning by using econometrics and mathematical approaches to solve models, assess solutions, and interpret empirical evidence.
- Communicate effectively about economic ideas, issues, and analyses; and develop proficiency in a foreign language.
- Understand and evaluate economic events and economic policy.

Major Breadth Requirements:
Courses used to fulfill the University Breadth Requirement above may also be used to fulfill the Major Breadth Requirements. Courses used to satisfy breadth requirements may also be used to satisfy major requirements. Minimum grade C- required for all courses used to satisfy the Major Breadth Requirements. - Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of Creative Arts and Humanities
- Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of History and Cultural Change
- Three credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences (cannot be satisfied by an ECON course, including cross-lists)
- Seven credits of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology (at least one course must have an associated laboratory). Cannot be satisfied by coursework used to meet the Mathematics & Statistics requirements below. Courses acceptable to satisfy laboratory requirement include:
Second Writing Requirement:
A Second Writing Requirement approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed. Courses used to satisfy the second writing requirement may also be used to satisfy major requirements. Foreign Language:
- Completion of the intermediate-level course (107 or 112) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of C-. Languages include ARAB, CHIN, FREN, GREK, GRMN, HEBR, ITAL, JAPN, KORE, LATN, PORT, RUSS and SPAN. Courses used to satisfy the foreign language requirement may also be used to satisfy major requirements.
- The number of credits (0-12) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
- Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.
Economics Electives:
- Six additional Economics courses (18 credits) at or above the 300-level, at least three of which are at or above the 400-level. Cross-listed courses may apply.
Mathematics & Statistics
Minimum grade C-. And one of the following:
Related Coursework:
- Minimum grade C- required for all courses used to satisfy the Related Coursework requirement. Cross-listed courses may apply.
- Nine credits chosen from any 300-level or higher courses in ACCT, ANTH, APEC (except APEC 343 , APEC 399 , and APEC 408 ), BUAD, CISC (except CISC 355 , CISC 356 , and CISC 357 ), ENEP, ENTR, FINC, GEOG, HIST, PHIL, POSC, PSYC, SOCI, STAT, and UAPP (except UAPP 390 ). Also acceptable are ACCT 207 , ACCT 208 , any 200-level or above MISY courses, MATH 210 , MATH 219 , MATH 221 , MATH 222, MATH 230 , MATH 232 , MATH 241 , MATH 242 , MATH 243 , MATH 245 , or a 300-level or higher Mathematics course (except MATH 308 , MATH 379 , MATH 380 , and MATH 382 ). Courses used to satisfy the Mathematics & Statistics requirements may not be used to fulfill the Related Coursework requirement.
Electives:
After required courses are completed, sufficient credits must be taken to meet the minimum credits required for the degree. No more than two credits can be from HBNS 120 .
