Program Abstract

Over the last thirty years, technology has rapidly permeated nearly every aspect of our society. The number of internet-connected devices that we interact with is growing at a blinding pace, with IoT devices alone increasing from 22B in 2018 to a projected 38.6B in 2025. Unfortunately, with this remarkable pace of technological adoption comes increased risk. While all users should feel secure in their privacy, the integrity of their data, and the infrastructure they use every day to power their homes and obtain clean water, these are becoming increasingly difficult to protect. As a result, more Cybersecurity professionals are needed in the workforce to combat these threats and risks. These professionals must rely heavily on their technical skills to prevent, and mitigate the impact of, cyber-attacks.

To learn Cybersecurity skills, it is necessary to work in a real network with tools used in production. This course provides training on several of the tools used by cybersecurity professionals, where applicable, on a virtual computer network. This allows each student to get hands-on experience with the technical aspects of Cybersecurity. These virtual networks can simulate many different environments and offer realistic challenges to each student. This course aims to establish a technical foundation for students that will lead to an impacting career in the work field. Students will utilize the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (Identity, Protect, Detect, Response, Recover). In each category, they will learn how to perform necessary technical operations to stop attackers from succeeding. The target individual for this course is someone who possesses an understanding of the fundamental concepts of cybersecurity and is seeking to learn the technical skills to pursue a career.

This course will cover the technical aspects of cybersecurity and show what tools and techniques are needed for a cybersecurity career. The material of the course will cover the following topics:

  1. Command Line Interfaces
  2. Packet Sniffing
  3. Network Firewalls
  4. Intrusion Detections
  5. Vulnerability Scanning
  6. Launching Exploits
  7. Collections Logs
  8. SQL Injection
  9. Cross-Site Scripting
  10. Cryptography
  11. Digital Forensics
  12. System Hardening
  13. Reverse Engineering
