Program Educational Goals:
Goal 1:
Philosophy: A graduate of this program will be able to develop, communicate, and implement a teaching philosophy.
Outcomes:
1.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of educational philosophies.
1.2. The student will synthesize their understanding of various educational philosophies to create a unique philosophy of music education.
1.3 The student will apply their understanding of educational philosophy to their pedagogy.
1.4 The student will communicate their personal philosophy of music education orally and in writing.
Goal 2:
Research: A graduate of this program will design and conduct quantitative and qualitative research with a teaching focus, and effectively communicate their findings.
Outcomes:
2.1 The student will synthesize and demonstrate an understanding of educational research methods, both quantitative and qualitative.
2.2 The student will demonstrate critical thinking when designing, conducting, and analyzing research studies.
2.3 The student will effectively communicate their research findings, both orally and in writing.
Goal 3:
Musicianship: A graduate of this program will be able to apply musicianship skills to their pedagogy, informed by a broad knowledge of performance, music theory, history, and literature.
Outcomes:
3.1 The student will demonstrate an advanced understanding of music theory and analytical skills.
3.2 The student will demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical tools of music history and literature.
3.3 The student will rehearse and perform collaboratively, contributing to an ensemble (Large Ensembles)
Goal 4:
Applied Pedagogy: A graduate of this program will be able to synthesize their understandings of philosophy, research, and musicianship to inform their pedagogical practice in a wide variety of music education contexts.
Outcomes:
4.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of how philosophy, research, and musicianship interact to inform their practice with diverse student groups.
4.2 The student will design and implement developmentally-appropriate pedagogical practices rooted in research and philosophy.
4.3 The student will design action research based on their understanding of philosophy and musicianship, with the intent of improving instruction in diverse teaching settings.
