History (MA)

Requirements for the Degree:

Candidates for the MA degree are required to complete 30 credits of coursework, of which 21 credits must be in history. Coursework for the MA can typically be completed within two years.

Required Coursework:

HIST 600 - Approaches to History Credit(s): 3
Four courses (12 credits) from the Approved History Reading Seminars: , excluding HIST 600.

Required Research and Writing Coursework:

MA non-Thesis students must complete 6 credits of research and writing coursework.
MA Thesis students must complete 9 credits of research and writing coursework as outlined below.

Two courses (6 credits) of coursework from the following list.

HIST 803 - Research and Writing Seminar: America to 1860 Credit(s): 3
HIST 805 - Research and Writing Seminar: America 1860-Present Credit(s): 3
HIST 807 - History beyond Borders Credit(s): 3

MA Thesis Required Research and Writing Coursework

One course (3 credits) from the following list, plus HIST 869 - Master’s Thesis (6 credits) for a total of 9 credits of coursework.

HIST 803 - Research and Writing Seminar: America to 1860 Credit(s): 3
HIST 805 - Research and Writing Seminar: America 1860-Present Credit(s): 3
HIST 807 - History beyond Borders Credit(s): 3
