History (MA)

Requirements for the Degree:


Candidates for the MA degree are required to complete 30 credits of course work, of which 21 credits must be in history. Coursework for the MA can typically be completed within two years.

Required Coursework:


3 credits. This course does not count as one of the four reading seminars.

Reading Seminars:


12 credits of coursework from the following courses.

Note:


With the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies, a HIST 666  component of an undergraduate lecture course or an independent study may count as a reading seminar. Such approval will be given only when a HIST 666  component includes regular “mini-seminar” meetings to discuss graduate-level readings and when our regularly scheduled seminars do not meet the student’s needs.

Research and Writing Seminars:


  • Non-thesis students must take 6 credits of coursework from the following history courses.
  • Students who wish to complete the M.A. thesis must take one research seminar for 3 credits plus HIST 869 - Master’s Thesis  for 9 credits.

In a given year, there may be other HIST research and writing seminars offered.

Electives:


Students may take up to 9 credits of elective coursework at the 600/800 - level chosen with advisor approval.

Credits to Total a Minimum of 30
