College Requirements:
College Breadth Requirements:
The College Breadth requirements are in addition to the University Breadth requirement. Up to three credits from each of the University Breadth Requirement categories may be used to simultaneously satisfy these College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements. Minimum grade C- required for courses used to satisfy College Breadth.
*If the grade earned is sufficient, a course may be applied toward more than one requirement (e.g., breadth and major requirements), but the credits are counted only once toward the total credits for graduation. If all but one course in a group has been taken in one department or program, a course cross-listed with that program will not satisfy the distribution requirement.
Foreign Language:
- Completion of the intermediate-level course (107 or 202) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of D-.
- The number of credits (0-12) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
- Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.
Mathematics:
The math requirement must be completed by the time a student has earned 60 credits. Students who transfer into the College of Arts and Sciences with 45 credits or more must complete this requirement within two semesters.

- Successful performance on a proficiency test in mathematics administered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences (0 credits awarded).
Second Writing Requirement:
A Second Writing Requirement approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed.
Major Requirements:
33 credits ARTH minimum; 45 credits maximum. Minimum grade of C- required in all ARTH courses taken to satisfy major requirements. Requirements in Art History (ARTH):
100-level ARTH courses:
- Two 100-level* ARTH courses, no more than six credits (ARTH 153 and ARTH 154 are recommended).
Distribution Area Requirements:
- Four courses at the 200-, 300-, or 400-level in the following ARTH distribution areas as designated below.
Geocultural Distribution Group:
Chronological Distribution Group:
200-, 300-, or 400-level ARTH courses:
- Two ARTH courses at 200-, 300-, or 400-levels (excluding ARTH 202 and ARTH 464 ).
Note:
- A minimum of 12 of the above 24 credits (the 100-level ARTH course requirements, the Distribution Area requirements, and the 200-, 300-, and 400-level ARTH course requirements) must be taken at UD.

*Students can petition to fill these requirements with ARTH courses that are higher than 100 level, with permission from their Art History faculty advisors.
**Courses used to meet one group’s requirement cannot be used to fulfill the other group and cannot be used to fulfill other Major requirements. Any course(s) taken will first count for the Geocultural Group, and once that Group’s requirements are satisfied, then Chronological group requirements. Once both Geocultural and Chronological group requirements are satisfied, and if the course(s) are also in the approved Art History Seminar list, courses will then count for the Art History seminar requirements. Any diversion from this order must be approved by ARTH faculty advisors with Course Substitution Form.
***Courses used to meet the seminar requirement cannot be used to fulfill any other Major requirements. Any course(s) taken will first count for the Geocultural Group, and once that Group’s requirements are satisfied, then Chronological group requirements; once both Geocultural and Chronological group requirements are satisfied, then if the course(s) are also in the approved Art History Seminar list, will then count for the Art History seminar requirements. Any diversion from this order must be approved by ARTH faculty advisors with Course Substitution Form.
Related Coursework:
- Three-credit of 200- or 300-level course from the approved list of College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Group of History and Cultural Change ; this course cannot be an ARTH course or cross-listed with an ARTH course.
- Nine credits from the following areas: Anthropology, Studio Art, Art Conservation (excluding ARTC 464 ), Education, English, History, Languages, Literatures and Cultures (except those used to satisfy the College’s foreign language requirement), Material Culture, Music, Philosophy, and Theatre. Courses in these fields that are cross-listed with Art History will only count towards the 33 credits in Art History courses, and do not satisfy related coursework requirements.
Electives
After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
