The Economics Majors (BA/BS)
Economics is a social science at the intersection of business and public policy. Studying economics equips students with analytical and communication skills that prepare them to think about complex issues. Students learn how individuals (households and firms) make decisions, how they interact in markets, and how government policy affects economic activity. They acquire useful knowledge in areas such as government regulation, development economics, household finance, economic data analysis, health economics, and labor economics.
The department offers both a BA and a BS in Economics to accommodate students with diverse academic interests and career goals. Students may earn either a bachelor of science or a bachelor of arts degree in economics depending on their strengths in mathematics and quantitative skills (BS) or foreign language (BA).
Economics Education
The degree in Economics Education trains effective teachers by combining core curricula of both economics and education. Students explore the intricacies of market dynamics, international trade, inflation, and unemployment, among other compelling topics. Additionally, students will learn the foundational principles of pedagogy, enabling them to craft engaging lessons for secondary students.
4+1 Program: Undergraduate + Accelerated Graduate Degrees
Students of both the BS and the BA of Economics have the opportunity to participate in 4+1 programs, combining their degree with a Masters in Public Policy. Students majoring in the BS program may also be able to combine their degree with the MS in Economics and Applied Econometrics. With careful planning, academically eligible students can complete both their undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in five years of academic study. Interested students must contact their academic advisor for specific curriculum information.
Economics Minor
The minor in Economics provides students in other degree programs an opportunity to study how people make choices and how those choices affect markets, resources, and wealth. Students will study how markets work and how income is distributed as well as explore the role and effects of competitive markets and monopolies on the economy and the problems of unemployment and inflation.
