In the School of Music, performers, educators, scholars, and creators of music collaborate to achieve the highest levels of artistry while engaging local, regional, and global communities. We seek to provide optimal resources for significant musical growth through ensembles, private study, and academic music courses available to the general student and others of the University community. We provide opportunities for cultural enrichment to the University, regional, national, and international communities, as well as leadership and support to music educators and other professional musicians in the region. The School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
The curricula for undergraduate students majoring in music lead to the degrees Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts. The programs in the degree Bachelor of Music are directed to those who intend to become professional musicians, while the degree Bachelor of Arts offers the opportunity for professional study in music with a liberal arts context. All music majors require an audition for admission (see “School of Music Policies”).
The Bachelor of Music in Applied Music is for students intent on a career as a professional musician or music professor within higher education. This degree track is designed to develop the highest level of musicianship on a primary instrument and to promote both scholarship and professionalism in the field.
The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation, and multimedia creative activities.
The Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Improvisation supports the development of spontaneous musical creativity through courses in jazz theory and history, improvisation, keyboard skills, arranging and composition, and applied study.
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education offers both instrumental and choral/general tracks in which students gain classroom experience through extensive, field-based teaching opportunities. This program is designed specifically to educate and provide certification for those intending to teach music in elementary or secondary schools in a public school system.
The Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature provides a rigorous core of courses in the history and literature of Western music and offers opportunities for deeper study in related fields such as music theory, literature, anthropology, philosophy, history, and foreign languages.
The Bachelor of Music in Music Theory exposes students to a broad array of approaches to understanding, analyzing, hearing, performing, and composing music.
The Bachelor of Arts in Music provides broad coverage of music combined with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. The Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Music Management Studies provides additional opportunities preparing students for administrative careers within the nonprofit and for-profit sectors of the music industry. All programs in music provide effective preparation for graduate study.
A minor in Music is available in Applied Music, Composition (for Music majors only), Jazz Studies, Music Management Studies, and Musical Studies.
The Music Minor in Applied Music is for non-Music majors with some musical background who wish to continue their musical training on a more formal basis or Music majors who wish to receive formal training on an additional instrument. Places in the Minor program are dependent upon the total load of the applied faculty member involved. Admission into the Applied Music Minor is determined by audition. This title represents all Applied Music Minors, the actual titles of which include the name of the instrument of study (e.g. Applied Music-Bassoon). Study is restricted to band or orchestral instruments, piano, classical guitar, and voice.
The Music Minor in Composition is designed for the Music major who has a strong interest in musical composition. Admission to the minor requires approval, based on an interview and the submission of three sample scores along with ‘audio/midi files’ for each of the three submitted scores.
The Music Minor in Jazz Studies offers a concentrated study of the history, theory, and performance elements of the field of jazz. It is directed towards two groups of students: (1) The non-Music major who desires a focused study of jazz and its performance techniques; (2) Music majors who wish to round out their education in music with a structured study of jazz. Entrance is determined by audition.
The Music Minor in Music Management Studies examines the theory and practice of core principles in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors of music. It is intended for Music majors who wish to broaden the scope of their studies and enhance their career options, and for non-Music majors with a foundation in music who wish to develop executive careers within the music industry. Students interested in the minor in Music Management Studies are strongly urged to seek advisement from the School of Music upon admission to the University and not later than their sophomore year.
The Music Minor in Musical Studies is for non-Music majors who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of the history and theory of music. No audition is required for admission into the Musical Studies minor.
School of Music Policies
Entering Music majors are expected to demonstrate a high level of musical achievement and aptitude through an audition on their primary instrument. Acceptance to the University does not indicate acceptance as a Music major. Students who transfer from accredited colleges are placed in appropriate levels of music theory, literature, and applied music according to the results of transfer credit assessments and placement tests given at the time of transfer. Music majors entering in the fall semester are required to take a variety of placement auditions and music theory assessments near the beginning of the semester. Students will receive advisement during the New Student Orientation period regarding these requirements.
Part-time Music majors must have the permission of the Director of the School of Music to enroll for private study.
Credit for large ensembles, as required by various curricula, is given only for participation during the fall and spring semesters. Bachelor of Music majors are required to complete a Sophomore Review at the end of the fourth semester of study. Passing the Sophomore Review is required before continuing to the upper-level Music major courses. Opportunities For Non-Majors
For the general University undergraduate, the School of Music offers courses in the fundamentals of music, music history and literature, class guitar, world music courses, and a variety of interdisciplinary, topic-based courses. All courses in the School of Music are available to any University student who meets prerequisites. Some music courses may be taken as partial fulfillment of Breadth requirements at the University and College of Arts and Sciences levels. Private study is also available to freshmen in the University Honors Program and to other non-Music majors, on a space-available basis, through the Merit Private Study Program. Auditions for these programs are held during the weekend before the first day of class of the academic year by arrangement with the School of Music office. A variety of performing organizations are available to all University students: marching band, wind and jazz ensembles, orchestra, choral groups, the early music ensemble, opera workshop, steel band, and various chamber ensembles.
