The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers Bachelor’s Degrees in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Construction Engineering and Management, all with Honors Degree options.
The Department also offers minors in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Infrastructure, and Environmental Sustainability.
Our undergraduate programs produce graduates that, within a few years of graduation, will:
- use problem-solving skills and engineering and sustainability principles to address the evolving needs of society;
- advance their civil/environmental/construction engineering and other careers through lifelong learning, graduate studies and/or professional licensure;
- demonstrate effective communication skills, ethical decision-making, and a commitment to their profession and society.
Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering involves the design, planning, construction, maintenance, repair and reuse of constructed facilities including dams, bridges, roads, waterways, railroads and tunnels. Mass transit systems, water resource management, environmental protection, coastal management and offshore structure designs are also part of civil engineering. The Civil Engineering curriculum includes specialization options in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and water resources, coastal engineering, railroad engineering, and transportation and infrastructure systems.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineering applies scientific principles and engineering tools to improve the natural environment, address pollution problems, and develop sustainable solutions. The core curriculum provides students with rigorous training in the causes, control, and prevention of environmental contamination and the flexibility to secure their future as an environmental engineer in industry, consulting, government, or academia.
Construction Engineering and Management
The Construction Engineering and Management program provides students foundational knowledge of civil engineering and the technical specifics of construction engineering and management through the core curriculum. The curriculum includes courses and instruction in estimating, scheduling, equipment and operations, law and regulations, construction safety, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and visualization. Technical electives are designed to give students more specific and specialized experience in construction productivity, sustainability, and equipment and techniques used in specific industry segments, such as heavy and engineered construction, residential, and commercial construction.
Departmental Policies
In general, 300- and 400-level CIEG courses are open only to students majoring or minoring in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Construction Engineering and Management. In some instances, other students may be permitted to enroll in selected 300- and 400-level courses, but they must have the permission of the course instructor.
The Department has developed standards that require minimum grades in certain courses. These standards are intended to promote success in the sequential development of the curriculum; specifics may be found on individual program pages.
