The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences promotes an interdisciplinary view of the plant-soil continuum that addresses local-to-national needs for food security, a sustainable environment, and the aesthetic and ecological values of landscapes. The Department offers education and training opportunities grounded in a systems approach that spans molecular, field, landscape, regional, and national scales.
Faculty in the department lead a diverse array of teaching and research programs that include: plant molecular biology, botany, anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, genetics-plant breeding, cell and tissue culture, pathology, ecosystem science, land/atmosphere interactions, horticulture, landscape architecture, crop and vegetable science, soil chemistry, soil management, soil physics, soil microbiology, biogeochemistry, and water resources. Undergraduate students are frequently involved with and make valuable contributions to faculty research programs. They gain hands-on experiences that strengthen and broaden their understanding of the natural world and prepare them for competitive job opportunities or graduate study.
Students can work towards majors in Landscape Architecture (BLA), Plant Science (BS), or Sustainable Food Systems (BS). Minors are offered in Environmental Soil Science and Landscape Horticulture.
