Program Overview

The goal of the Master of Science in Hospitality Business Management is to build on students’ past experiences and potential interests by providing pathways towards business oriented analytical careers in the hospitality industry.

The Department is ranked among the top ten programs in the United States. The MS-HBM faculty possesses relevant and highly accomplished academic backgrounds in the sub-areas of hospitality business management such as information technology, strategic management, financial management, e-marketing, human resource management, and project planning. This innovative program focuses on problem solving and decision making skills in response to the rapid growth of information management needs in the hospitality and tourism sectors of industry. The 30-credit program is ideal for industry professionals and hospitality graduates seeking to augment their operational skills with analytical capabilities in traditional and experience-driven learning settings. Apart from a one-week “Industry Immersion Program” of workshops conducted by leading industry professionals on contemporary topics, the program also includes a Six-Week Advanced Hotel Practicum wherein students work at the University’s Courtyard by Marriott and get first-hand exposure of a general manager’s duties, tasks, and responsibilities.

Successful candidates who choose to continue their studies and qualify for the MBA at the Lerner College of Business and Economics can complete a dual degree (MS/MBA), with the completion of an additional 30 credits. Students who plan their studies effectively can complete the dual degree in a minimum of two years.

Requirements For Admission

Admission to the program is selective and competitive. Please refer to Graduate Admissions  for more information. Those who meet stated minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed admission, nor are those who fail to meet those requirements necessarily precluded from admission if they offer other appropriate strengths. Prospective full time candidates are admitted for the fall semester only. Part-time candidates may begin in the fall or spring semester.

Candidates for admission need not have majored in hospitality previously, but they will be expected to possess strong written and oral communication skills, quantitative and qualitative analytical abilities, an understanding of business principles as it relates to products/services, and prior work with word processing and spreadsheets. Appropriate credit and non-credit courses are available at UD to students with deficiency in any of these areas.
