AFRA 371 - African American Music: History and Culture, 1800-1995

This course examines the history and scholarship of African American music from the age of slavery to the 1990s. Focusing on African American sacred and secular music, we will investigate how different musical genres–including spiritual, blues, jazz, gospel, rhythm, and the birth of hip hop–reflected African Americans’ social, political, and economic experiences.
