Restricted Majors



There is no University policy restricting students from declaring a major or a minor based on GPA. The following majors, listed below, are limited by accreditation or other academic requirements (minimum GPA, pre-requisites, etc.), availability of resources, physical space limitations (such as lack of laboratory space), or already have full capacity (e.g. training at Vita Nova).To submit a request to change major or minors, please complete the form found here:

Agriculture and Natural Resources:

Restricted Majors:

Animal Science (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA.

Animal Biosciences (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA. 

Environmental and Resource Economics - Economics of Sustainability and Policy Concentration (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.25 GPA.

Environmental and Resource Economics - Natural Resource Management Concentration (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.25 GPA.

Food and Agribusiness Marketing and Management (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.25 GPA.

Insect Ecology and Conservation (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.0 GPA.

Landscape Architecture (BLA) : Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA. Cohort sizes are restricted by accreditation standards. GPA exceptions determined by interview only.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA and have passed MATH 115  or higher and CHEM 103 .

Statistics (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.25 GPA.

Wildlife Ecology and Conservation (BS) : Internal transfers must have a 2.0 GPA.

For the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources applications for change of major are accepted at any time throughout the academic year.

Arts and Sciences:

Restrictions:

Art and Design Majors :

Students who wish to change their major to art and design must first enter the Bachelor of Arts in  Art (BA) degree program . The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible: Cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher. If any ART courses have been taken, they must have received grades of C- or better to fulfill degree requirements. Admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fine Arts (BFA)   and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications (BFA)  require completion of the core art studio courses with grades of C- or better, an art major GPA of 2.7 or higher, successful submission of an online portfolio, and a degree progress review. Acceptance into the programs will be made based on academic and artistic performance.

Communication (BA): Students must declare a concentration when requesting to transfer into the major. In order to transfer into any concentration (Interpersonal Communication , Media Communication , Public Relations ) a student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. If any COMM courses have been taken, students must have earned grades of C- or better.

Fashion Design and Product Innovation (BS) : Must complete FASH 122  with a grade of C- or above. If any other FASH courses are taken, they must have grades of C- or better. Students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher to be considered. Acceptance into the program will be made based on number of open seats, seniority and academic performance.

Fashion Merchandising and Management (BS) : Must have taken MATH 114  or higher. If any other FASH courses are taken, they must have grades of C- or better. Students should have a 2.0 GPA or higher. Acceptance into the program will be made based on number of open seats, seniority and academic performance.

Foreign Language Education “Interest” :

Students who wish to change their major to Foreign Language Education must first declare a Spanish Studies, French Studies, Italian Studies, German Studies, Latin Studies or Classics Studies major with “an interest in Education.” The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible to declare the Foreign Language Education major:

  1. Completion of at least two 300-level Foreign Language courses,
  2. A minimum GPA of 2.75 overall, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their language courses.

Liberal Studies - Medical Scholars Program (BA) : The College of Arts and Sciences offers the Medical Scholars Program, an eight-year (4+4) academic program sponsored by the University of Delaware in collaboration with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. To join the interest group, first-year students are encouraged to attend one of our interest group meetings offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students can learn the dates for these meetings by connecting with the Center for Health Professions Studies in the first few weeks after starting at UD. At the meeting, students will be given detailed information on the program application, requirements, and affiliated schools. After attending an interest meeting, you will be given access to a Canvas page with specific application details.

Music Majors : The application deadline for all music majors is January 15. Admission to all music majors requires an audition. Auditions are held only in Winter Session. Current UD students considering a change of major to music should email Music Admissions. The School of Music Admissions Office as early as possible to discuss audition requirements. Please review the required audition repertoire for your relevant instrumental or voice category.

  • Spring Admissions: Submit your application by September 15th and you will be notified by September 30th;
  • Fall Admissions: Submit your application by February 15th and you will be notified by February 28th.
  • For students taking FASH 122  during spring semester, Internal Transfer applications are due on May 15th and students will be notified by May 30th.

Fashion Merchandising and Management (BS)  

  • Application deadlines:
  • FALL - September 15th;  
  • SPRING - February 15th.

Registration - Business Courses for non-BE Students

Non-College of Business and Economics Undergraduate Students: All undergraduate College of Business and Economics courses (ACCT, BUAD, BUEC, ECON, ENTR, EVNT, FINC, HOSP, MISY and SPTM) have a restriction that will block enrollment if it will take you over 25 hours of BE credits completed.  Business Essentials (ACCT 200 , BUAD 100 , ECON 100  and FINC 200 ), transfer and test credit are excluded from this total.

Students admitted to a UD major or minor that requires more than 25 credits in the Lerner College of Business and Economics may exceed this limit.  If you need to take the course, but have exceeded the credit limit, please contact the appropriate Business and Economics Department.

Restrictions (all majors are restricted):

Accounting (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Business Analytics (BS) : Complete the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101  and MATH 115 MATH 221  or MATH 232   or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Economics Majors :

  1. Economics (BA)  and Economics Education (BA) : Completed the following classes with a C- or better: ECON 101 ; ECON 103 ; ECON 300  or ECON 301 ; and MATH requirement (MATH 114 , MATH 115 , MATH 117 , MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 ). Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware and have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to apply.
  2. Economics (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , ECON 103 , ECON 301 ; and MATH 221  or MATH 232  or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to apply.

Entrepreneurship (BS) : Admission into the major is highly selective due to capacity limitations. Students must confirm space availability in their class year. Completed 12 credits at the University of Delaware. Completed ENTR 350 /BUAD 350  with a C- or better. Preference will be given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, however, students with a demonstrated record of involvement in entrepreneurship may be considered. Finance (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101  and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware. Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fintech (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101  and MATH 115 , MATH 221 , MATH 232  or MATH 241 .  Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware.  Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA to apply and an interview.  Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Financial Planning and Wealth Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware. Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA and an interview to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Global Enterprise Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101  and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Hospitality Industry Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with a C- or better: ECON 101  and HOSP 180 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware.  Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA to apply.  Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Hospitality and Event Experience Management - Event Management Concentration (BS)  and Hospitality and Event Experience Management - Hospitality Business Management Concentration (BS)  : Completed the following classes with a C- or better: ECON 101  and HOSP 180 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware.  Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA to apply.  Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

International Business Studies (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware. Must be enrolled in a foreign language course to be eligible to apply. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Management Information Systems (BS):  Students are encouraged to take MISY 160 . Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware and have a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply. If the student does not have the 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA, the student will still be considered for admission on a case by case basis if a grade of B+ or better is earned in MISY 225 .

Marketing (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Operations Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 , and MATH 115 MATH 221 MATH 232 , or MATH 241 . Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Sport Management (BS) : Completed the following classes with a C- or better: ECON 101  and SPTM 210 .  Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 to apply. Requests for admission below the minimum GPA are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Dates to request transfers:

The Lerner College of Business and Economics processes requests for changes of major into their Restricted Majors twice a year.

Fall Term Requests:

  • Students can submit a Change Major, Minor, Concentration form through UDSIS between  March 15 and August 5.  
  • All the other criteria will remain as is (GPA, credit hours, etc., as listed for each major).

Spring Term Requests:

  • Students can submit a Change Major, Minor, Concentration form through UDSIS between October 15 and January 5.
  • All the other criteria will remain as is (GPA, credit hours, etc., as listed for each major).

Earth, Ocean, and Environment:

Restrictions:

Meteorology and Climate Science (BS) : Student should have a C- or better in MATH 241 .

Marine Science - Marine Biology Concentration (BS) : Minimum GPA of 2.5 and have completed at least two of the following with a grade of C or better: BISC 207 , CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 , MATH 241 .

Education and Human Development:

Restrictions:

Early Childhood Education (BS) : Students with 0-32 credits earned must have a minimum of 2.25 GPA; students with 33-60 credits must have a minimum of 2.4 GPA; students with 61 or more credits must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA.  Students will complete a written application and admitted based on program capacity.  Students looking to enter the major from the UD Associate in Arts program should contact 302-831-6500 for information about admission requirements.

Elementary Teacher Education Majors : Minimum 2.60 GPA and passing scores on the Praxis Core exam or exempt scores on the SAT or ACT.

Human Services - Pre-Social Work/Counseling Concentration (BS) : Restriction is based on the number of credits earned and overall GPA in order to meet the Senior internship requirement: 0-32 credits: 2.25 GPA; 33-60 credits: 2.4 GPA; 61 + credits: 2.5 GPA.  Students will complete a written application and admitted based on program capacity.  Students looking to enter the major from the UD Associate in Arts program should contact 302-831-6500 for information about admission requirements.

For the College of Education and Human Development, applications will be accepted at any time and reviewed and admitted on a rolling basis.

Engineering:

The College of Engineering processes requests for changes of major into their Restricted Majors twice a year. However, the Computer and Information Sciences department may make some decisions in June and November for selected student populations as described below.

For Spring Term Requests: Students seeking a change to an Engineering major can submit a Change Major, Minor, Concentration form through UDSIS after their fall term grades are published in UDSIS but by January 4. Decisions will be made and communicated via email on or before January 12.

  • Non-first-year, non-first semester students seeking a change to a Computer Science BA or BS major or Information Systems BS Major may submit a Change of Major Form at any point after August 12 but by January 4. The Department of Computer and Information Sciences reserves the right to make some early decisions on these requests in November.

For Fall Term Requests: Students seeking a change to an Engineering major can submit a Change Major, Minor, Concentration form through UDSIS between the time their spring term grades are published in UDSIS but by August 4. Decisions will be made and communicated via email on or before August 12.

  • Non-first-year, non-first semester students seeking a change to a Computer Science BA or BS major or Information Systems BS Major may submit a Change of Major Form at any point after January 12 but by August 4. The Department of Computer and Information Sciences reserves the right to make some early decisions on these requests in June.

Important Notes:
  1. The Restricted Major policies for the majors listed below apply to ALL students for Change of Major requests for the Fall Term - including those who are still listed as EGU students after their freshman year.
  2. First-year freshmen EGU students are not allowed to request a Change of Major for their first fall term through this process.
  3. First-Year Freshman EGU Exemption: Please note that the Restricted Major policies for the majors listed below do NOT apply to first-year freshmen Engineering Undeclared (EGU) students. The Engineering Common First Semester is designed to allow Engineering Undeclared (EGU) students to learn about the various College of Engineering majors offered at UD and then request a Change of Major effective in their freshman spring semester. At any point between the Mid-Term Grade Deadline and November 15 each year, first-year freshmen EGU students will be able to request a Change of Major. All first-year freshmen EGU students who meet this deadline will be allowed access to the requested major based upon their performance relative to the first-year freshmen EGU Change of Major applicant pool and the physical capacity limitations as determined by the department.
Restricted Major Information:

Please note that meeting or exceeding the Restricted Major GPA and course requirements listed below does NOT guarantee admission to the major.

Biomedical Engineering Majors : Restricted for all students due to program capacity limitations. Prospective student applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, a grade of B or better in CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 , and a grade of B- or better in MATH 241 .

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Majors : Restricted for all students due to program capacity limitations. Prospective student applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and a grade of B or better in both CHEM 111  and MATH 242 , or equivalent.

Civil, Environmental Engineering, or Construction Engineering & Management Majors : Restricted for all students due to program capacity limitations. Students wishing to transfer into one of the three majors will need a minimum GPA of 2.75. Meeting the minimum GPA requirements does not guarantee admission. Grades in program-required technical courses (math, basic science, and engineering) are also considered in the decision.

Computer Science or Information Systems Majors : To apply for a change of major into any of the Computer Science or Information Systems programs, students must have taken CISC 106  or CISC 108  or a higher level CISC course at UD.  Students must also have taken MATH 117  or MATH 241  or a higher level math course at UD. Applications that also meet the following requirements will be guaranteed acceptance based upon departmental capacity: taken MATH 241  or a higher level math course at UD; cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; combined GPA for all MATH and CISC courses of 3.6 or higher. Applications that do not meet the requirements above, but do meet the following requirements, will be considered based upon departmental capacity: cumulative GPA of 3.0; combined GPA for all MATH and CISC courses of 3.2.

Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Cybersecurity Engineering Majors : Students must earn a grade of B‐ or better in MATH 242  and a grade of B‐ or better in PHYS 207 /PHYS 227 , or their equivalents. Students must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Mechanical Engineering Majors : Restricted for all students due to program capacity limitations. Prospective student applicants should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. However, grades in program-required technical courses (math, basic science, and engineering) will also be heavily considered in the decision.

Materials Science and Engineering Majors : Students who wish to change major to materials science and engineering must have a strong math and science background, a 3.0 GPA and a “B” or better in CHEM 111  and MATH 241 .

Health Sciences:

Restrictions:

Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BS) : Admission requires completion of BISC 207 BISC 208 , CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 CHEM 104 /CHEM 134 CHEM 213 /CHEM 215  or CHEM 321 /CHEM 325 , CHEM 214 /CHEM 216  or CHEM 322 /CHEM 326 , MATH 114  and the sequence of KAAP 309 /KAAP 310  or PHYS 201 /PHYS 221  and PHYS 202 /PHYS 222 . Completion of approximately 60 credits and a cumulative 2.9 GPA are preferred for consideration for admission to the Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology major.  Requests for admission below minimum 2.9 GPA considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students interested in the major can apply at any time for admission to the Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Interest program.

Health Behavior Science - Health and Disability Concentration (BS) : Students who wish to add this concentration must have completed one semester of chemistry (CHEM 103 /CHEM 133  with C- or above) and have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

Human Physiology  Majors: Students must have taken CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 , CHEM 104 /CHEM 134 , BISC 207 BISC 208  with a minimum grades of B- in each, have completed 28 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have approximately a 3.2 GPA when seeking admittance to Human Physiology. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee entry into the major; approval for change of major is contingent on available space. See below for dates to request a change of major.

Integrated Health Sciences (BS) : Approval for change of major is contingent on available space.

Integrated Health Sciences - Pre-Occupational Therapy Concentration (BS) : This major is restricted to students who have been accepted into the 3+3 Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (OTD) with Thomas Jefferson University (TJU). Students apply to the TJU OTD program after completion of their 3rd semester in the BS in Integrated Health Sciences major at UD. If accepted into the TJU OTD program, students will be admitted into the UD BS in Integrated Health Sciences - Pre-Occupational Therapy Concentration.

Kinesiology (BS)  (previously Exercise Science Majors): Students must have taken CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 , CHEM 104 /CHEM 134 , BISC 207 , BISC 208  with a minimum grades of C in each, have completed 28 credit hours at the University of Delaware, and have approximately a 3.0 GPA when seeking admittance to Kinesiology. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee entry into the major; approval for change of major is contingent on available space. See below for dates to request a change of major.

Medical Diagnostics (BS)  (including the Pre-Physician Concentration ): Students interested in these majors must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Medical Laboratory Science (BS) : Completion of BISC 207 , BISC 208 , BISC 300 , BISC 306 CHEM 103 /CHEM 133 CHEM 104 /CHEM 134 CHEM 213 , CHEM 215 , CHEM 214  and CHEM 216 . Completion of 60 credits, an overall 2.0 GPA, and a 2.0 science index GPA are required for consideration for admission to the Medical Laboratory Science major.  Students interested in the major can apply at any time for admission to the Medical Laboratory Science Interest program.

Nursing (BSN) : Completion of NURS 120  , KAAP 220  & KAAP 230  or KAAP 221  & KAAP 231  or KAAP 309  and PSYC 100  with grades of B or better and a minimum UD GPA of 3.0. Admission is very competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. The department will accept 5 students each January to begin in the spring semester. Please note: Students who are accepted as change of majors into Nursing must be ready to complete a full 3.5 years of classes beginning in Spring regardless of current class year.

Nutrition and Medical Sciences (BS) : Students interested in this major must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. 

Sports Health (BS) : Students must have taken CHEM 103  / CHEM 133  , or BISC 207   with a minimum grade of C and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee entry into the major; approval for change of major is contingent on available space.

For College of Health Sciences majors, change of majors are reviewed as received, with the following exceptions:

Human Physiology  and Kinesiology (BS)   

  • Students must submit the “Change of Major” form in UDSIS from January 1-15 (for spring acceptance) or June 1-15 (for fall acceptance); students will be notified by February 1 or July 1 respectively.

Nursing Majors:  

  • Students who have completed the requirements for consideration should submit a change of major webform by December 15.
