Mathematics Education (BS)

Second Writing Requirement:
A Second Writing Requirement approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed.
Foreign Language:
 Completion of the intermediatelevel course (107 or 112) in an ancient or modern language with minimum grades of D.
 The number of credits (012) needed and initial placement will depend on the number of years of high school study of foreign language.
 Students with four or more years of high school work in a single foreign language, or who have gained proficiency in a foreign language by other means, may attempt to fulfill the requirement in that language by taking an exemption examination through the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.
College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements:
The College Breadth Requirements are taken in addition to the University Breadth Requirement. Up to three credits from each of the University Breadth Requirement categories may be used to simultaneously satisfy these College of Arts and Sciences Breadth Requirements. College Breadth courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
A total of 18 credits from Groups A, B, and C is required with a minimum of six credits in each group. The six credits from each group could be from the same area.
Major Requirements:
Minimum grade of C required for major courses, related work, and Professional Studies.
Modeling Elective:
One of the following:
 MATH 512  Contemporary Applications of Mathematics
 MATH 518  Mathematical Models and Applications
Mathematics Option:
One of the following:
Computer Science:
One of the following:
Laboratory Science:
 Twosemester (eight credits) sequence of laboratory science (courses designed for nonmajors in a discipline are not appropriate, except for CHEM 103 /CHEM 104 and CHEM 107 /CHEM 108 ).
Restricted Electives:
 Six additional credits in mathematics or in related disciplines at the 300level or above.
 Courses not approved for math majors cannot be counted towards these six additional credits.
 Nonmathematics courses can be in CISC, ECON, PHYS and STAT from an approved list maintained by the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Professional Development:
Note:
To be eligible to student teach, Mathematics Education students must have a GPA of 2.5 in their mathematics major and an overall GPA of 2.5. They must also pass a teacher competency test as established by the University Council on Teacher Education. Remaining in the program is subject to periodic review of satisfactory progress and, to be admitted to EDUC 400  Student Teaching (3 to 12cr.) , students must have completed all the mathematics courses required in the secondary mathematics education program. Students should consult the teacher education program coordinator to obtain the student teaching application and other information concerning student teaching policies.
Electives:
After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
