The History Department offers several options to its undergraduate students. In addition to the regular major, students can choose a concentration in American, European, or World history. In conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development, the Department offers a History Education program for those choosing careers as social studies teachers. Collaboration with the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures has resulted in a major combining languages with the history of the regions in which those languages are spoken. The Department encourages interdepartmental or double majors that enable a student to develop competence in two areas, such as history and public administration or history and economics. Honors Degree options are available for all majors and concentrations. Students interested in completing a senior thesis under the direction of a faculty member can graduate with a degree with Distinction.

The study of history offers students opportunities to develop their analytical and writing skills and prepares them for lives as informed citizens. Upon graduation, history majors enter careers in teaching, government, non-profit administration, and business. Others pursue graduate education in history, law, public policy, theology, business, or other fields.

The Minor in Museum Studies allows students to explore the multi-faceted world of museums and other cultural institutions that collect and share artifacts, documents, visual materials and stories with the public. The United States alone has more than 30,000 museums, and more Americans visit museums each year than attend all professional sporting events combined. And a recent study shows that 81 per cent of Americans regard museums as more trustworthy than all other sources of historical information. Americans Museums are the places where Americans gather to refresh their minds and senses, and where they share stories of the past and present.

Some students declaring the Museum Studies minor are interested in pursuing museum careers; others are simply curious about the institutions that they enjoy visiting and see themselves as future volunteers and supporters. Either way, the array of courses in the minor, combined with the required internship, offers an opportunity to go “behind the scenes.”

The Museum Studies minor is open to all undergraduates. It consists of eighteen credit hours. One core course, MSST 203 Introduction to Museums is required, as is a three-credit internship. Courses from a wide variety of departments and programs may be applied. Museum Studies also offers courses on collection management, museum education, and other topics taught by museum professionals from the region.
