JAPAN’S GLOBAL POP CULTURE

The course asks the question, what is Japanese about global popular culture? It explores the theory and practice of global popular culture as it emerges from the history of popular culture in Japan from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century. Topics include entertainment, sports, mass media, tourism, fashion, consumerism, sexuality and gender. The course combines lecture and discussion with intensive reading and writing.
